Animal Experimentation Products used on your body are always tested for safety before being bought and sold to consumers. Experimentations and testing are used for cosmetics, food and drugs and is done on animals. In any local beauty supply stores, such as Sephora or CVS Pharmacy some brands state that the items are cruelty-free. What does cruelty free-mean? It’s to inform buyers that the products are not experimented on animals. What are the procedures and requirements to conducting these tests? I strongly believe that experimentation on animals should not be allowed because they are painful, inhumane and there are several alternative testing methods.
Many animals are killed every year in cruel and painful ways due to the toxicity of chemicals and poison. “Animals are forced to swallow or inhale massive quantities of a test substance or have a chemical smeared in their eyes or on their skin.” (PETA.org) Several tests include acute toxicity testing which is using a great quantity of chemicals that animals are forced to intake and inhale through tubes. The animals then have side effects and suffer from abdominal pain, seizures, diarrhea or die. Rodents, or more specially a female rat is used for this test because females are more sensitive than the males. The use of eye shadow or any eye products individuals use are tested by eye irritation and corrosion. The involves about one to three rabbits and is rubbed on the eyes of the animal.
