Animal experimentation is an important necessity for the science community, but because it is a controversial topic, there are many who believe that it shouldn’t be continued. At the same time, there is also a group who have deemed it a necessity in the advancement in medicine. Throughout the history of mankind, there have been a great number of breakthroughs that have saved many lives; in most cases, it was an animal that had to have been tested on first. Even though, animal experimentation was used excessively in the past and contributed much to science, this type of practice should begin to advance in its methods. Times have changed and there shouldn’t be a need to stick to the old ways.
Animals have been used in medical research for a very long time and even then, there has been much debate on it. Some history behind this “early Greek physician-scientists, such as Aristotle, (384-322 BC) and Erasistratus, (304-258 BC), performed experiments on living animals. Likewise, Galen (129-199/ 217 AD), a Greek physician who practiced in Rome and was a giant in the history of medicine, conducted animal experiments to advance the understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology.
