When looking around at other people there’s a good chance one doesn’t think those around them are cruel, but is that actually the case? Mark Twain, in his essay, “The Lowest Animal”, states that, “Of all the animals, man is the only one that is cruel” (2). Many have argued and gone back and forth on this topic. There is evidence for both sides; however, with all the things going on in the world today it is easy to say that Twain is correct and man is indeed cruel. Man showcases their cruelty in numerous different ways. One of which is animal cruelty. It transpires all around the world. Canned hunting, also known as captive hunting, is a type of trophy hunt where animals of all kinds are specifically bred to be killed by a hunter in an enclosed area, leaving them with virtually no chance of escape. It is an extremely popular sport that is done in numerous countries all around the world. The animals involved, such as lions, are normally hunted with a bow and arrow instead of a gun. This leads to an slow, painful, and agonizing death for the animal, but the human gets more thrill out of it. People participate in these canned hunts for fur, skin, bones, or even just recreation. The whole process of these hunts have negative effects on the animals from the time they are born. For example, when cubs are first born they are taken from their mother, put in different types of tourist attraction, then when they reach a certain age they are placed in a canned hunt. The mother of these cubs becomes unhealthy, weak, and frail because she is forced to produce two litters a year, which is not the normal. All because of this “fun” game and experience, that always has the same outcome, the animal undergoes an agonizing death, psychological and physical damage is done as well.
