Why Do People Kill Animals

Superior Essays
If humans killed each other as fast as they kill animals, we’d be extinct in a matter of days. The kill rate for animals is disgraceful. On average, 56 billion farm animals are killed, 3,000 animals die every second in slaughterhouses, and over 115 million animals of all species are killed in laboratory experiments throughout the year. We as a society should be protecting these animals who cannot protect themselves. Animal cruelty is the act of someone hurting or mistreating an animal and it is against the law. It does not matter if the individual abusing the animal is the owner of the pet or if it 's a stray animal. Sadly, even though this type of cruelty is against the law, many humans still perform this act of violence every day. Unfortunately, animal cruelty runs deeper than a group of teenagers setting a cat on fire to watch it suffer, farming associations violently kill and insensitively care for the animals in their possession.

They believe animals do not deserve rights because they don’t complete the duties that an everyday person does. They believe rights only come from the “ability to think” not the “ability to suffer.” In other words, if rights are given from the ability to think than some humans - babies and mentally incapacitated - do not deserve to have rights. The ability to think is seen as an absurd reason to obtain rights. Newborns, the mentally ill and mentally incapacitated also cannot fulfill the task/duties of an average person, therefore do not deserve their rights either. If only those who have the ability to think had rights, then the mentally disabled, babies and the mentally ill would be free to kill and

Many people don’t realize how badly animals are treated on factory farms. They also have this idea that animals are treated “humanely” on certain factory farms. Animals are not treated humanely on factory farms in any way because no matter what factory farm they get sent to, they are abused, neglected, and forced to live unnatural and unhealthy lives. Animals on factory farms are abused in so many different ways. For instance, cows are dragged by their legs using machines and hit with hard objects to get them in trailers and pens.…

An essential ingredient to improving animal welfare and human health is to farm slower and smaller. The World Animal Protection and the Farm Animal Initiative have developed a project called the Model Farm Project in effort to promote humane farming internationally. The WAP link, “Farm Animal Welfare,” argues that humane farming is both profitable and sustainable. The WAP asserts that keeping farms moderately sized creates jobs, reduces pollution and environmental damage (and expensive clean up efforts), and raises profits because healthy animals are less costly to maintain. In terms of animal welfare, the key is allowing animals to behave and eat as normally as possible.…

For years, testing has been run at the expense of animals to protect humans from a range of products and chemicals including pesticides, cosmetics, household cleaners, and vaccines. This testing, and abuse of animals has raised serious ethical dilemmas and a moral debate in deliberately poisoning animals for the sake of our betterment. Is there a possibility that a better way of testing these harmful products could exist? If we must test on animals, is there a safer way? The proposed Animal Bill of Rights addresses these questions, and should be passed to protect animals from exploitation, cruelty, neglect, and abuse.…

“A dog, maybe a monkey, only a rat— someone inhuman, less than human, maybe even the same— cries in the dark and cannot bear another moment of pain. He dreams of a place called home but waking remembers it is only a dream. Yet maybe they will think of you with the soap they use to wash away dirt, little sins they forget or choose to ignore, with the powders and shadows they wear to hide truths, or the polish they sweat over so their floors shine just so. Yes, the rest of the world, in its way does remember you but thinks nothing of what you have given so they can have more” (Newbury 1). This short passage was written to show how inhumane our civilization is for using living creatures as test subjects.…
