Pain and Misery in the Animal Kingdom Approximately a million animals suffer through experimentations each year and end up dead (“How Many Animals are Used”). Animal experimentation is when animals go through examination to determine the effects that a product has on humans. Different types of animals, such as rats, mice, hamsters, and cats, are put into cramped cages when waiting for their turn. These animals appear for experiments whether they are healthy or not. During testing, the poor living organisms experience pain, misery and sometimes death. Each test is for health care, cosmetics, and for studying the human body. Animal experimentation causes animals to suffer and the

Human cells and tissues must be present to conduct an experiment for humans. Vitro research allows “simplification of the system or disease under study, allowing the investigator to focus on a small number of components” (“Animals in Science”). The vitro research contains live human cells making research more accurate than using animal cells. Human volunteers give up their cells for research assisting the collection of accurate results. Henrietta Lacks death causes researchers to steal her cells for studying and developing treatments for “herpes, leukemia, influenza, hemophilia and Parkinson’s disease, and they’ve been used to study lactose digestion, sexually transmitted diseases, appendicitis, human longevity, mosquito mating, and the negative effects of working in sewers” (“Animals in Science”). Mrs. Lacks’s cells are HeLa cells that give researchers a way to test and experiment on different diseases. Her cells helps create new medication and treatments to combat many diseases out in the world today. Vitro testing impacts our lives today making animal research not the only …show more content…
Using animals for research appears to be a choice for there are other alternative methods of testing. Other methods using technology research are available to provide data for drug development and experimentation. Poor animals that appear for experimentation do not have to sit through misery and pain any longer if animal experimentation were illegal. As a society, observe the importance of going cruelty-free by educating each other with alternative methods for experimentation in order to prevent animal harm in

Still today, the HeLa cells are used for research and over time, the cells have traveled nearly all over the world. The further use of these cells for research is immoral due to how Henrietta cells were obtained. Her race, gender, socioeconomically status indirectly caused her to be taken advantage of. According to the, “Ethical Principles- The Belmont Report”, “Informed consent is one of the primary ethical requirements underpinning research with human subjects…”…

The cell line has also helped to determine ethical barriers for when human cells are used for experimentation. Dr. Lawrence Wharton Jr. shaved two pieces from Henrietta’s cervix, one from her tumor and one from the surrounding healthy tissue for TeLinde’s research on cervical cancer. He sent them to Dr. George Gey to be cultured by his assistant, Mary Kubicek. Henrietta’s cells multiplied extremely quickly- a vastly different outcome compared…

The question is simple. Is the person’s personal rights over their tissue more important than contributing to science and research to benefit the common good? I believe that a person’s rights to his or her own body is more important. Scientists seem to exploit people for samples of cells only to make a profit.…

Ethical Mistakes Involving Henrietta Lacks Henrietta Lacks will continuously be used to further medical research. When she died in 1951, her cells were isolated creating a cell line called HeLa cells. After Lacks’ death, her cells were cloned and studied without her consent. The cells obtained from her were special because they were unusually strong cancer cells which could grow rapidly and indefinitely in the right medium (“Quick Guide to HeLa Cells,” n.d.).…

Profit vs. Human Being Regarding a medical breakthrough like Henrietta Lacks ' cells, there are many ethical considerations that follow. In the 1950s informed consent was not an option. People were being used for medical research without having any knowledge of it. Henrietta Lacks ' is where it all began because her cells were different than everyone else’s. While Henrietta Lacks died her cells did not and are of great value to medical research today.…

Despite going against what is ethically right in invading Henrietta lacks somatic rights, the world has seen a myriad of disease antidotes. Still to this day even, “[her] cells have become the standard laboratory workhorse”(Stump 131). If they had not taken HeLa cells for research, there’s no way to tell if we could have suffered a mutilating cost. Without the cures HeLa cells have done, we could have reached an apocalyptic scene where those very diseases that were cured might have spread across the world, killing millions. The Executive Director of the Presidential Commissions Lisa M. Lee states, “The benefits of research have to outweigh the risks to the individuals involved” (Stump 131).…

She was not aware of what scientists had done to her body during her treatment, but if there was a slight chance she had known and declined, a cure would not have been developed. The discovery of what scientists found in Henrietta Lacks would become the key to creating a vaccine for the polio virus disease. Henrietta’s discovery allowed a field and understanding of virology and a vaccine that would have the potential to eradicate the polio virus disease and further examine the cause of HPV amongst other sexually transmitted diseases that Henrietta had contracted. Despite controversy on the violation of her rights due to doctors taking her cells without consent, once the cells are outside the body they have no ownership and doctors should have no backlash for doing research that gives a better understanding for diseases on humans.…

Animal Experimentation Animal experimentation has been around for many centuries. Humans perform these experiments on all species of animals to find different effect of a product it could have on a human. Three advantages in particular advantages are, it helps scientists gain a better understanding for cures of different diseases, this practice makes a vital advance in medicine, and for the expense of treatments and cures animals should not have rights when it comes to research. Although there are many advantages to animal experimentation, there are also disadvantages which include, there is no benefit for the humans, it is cruel, and is dangerous for humans to be treated only after a trial on animals. The first advantage to animal experimentation is using animals like rats can help the scientist gain better knowledge for different…

The animals kept in laboratories for experimentation go through mistreatment and incredible pain for human gain (Bishop and Nolen 92). Animal experimentation began centuries ago around the 1700’s in ancient Rome where many artists and scholars became curious over the human body. Technology was not as advanced as it is today so the alternatives that are present now were not present then. They believed that using the human body as an experiment was wrong and that humans have dominion over the animals. In addition, they also believed that animals were not capable of feeling any…

Goldberg, the author explores animal testing from a slightly different perspective. Goldberg acknowledges that sometimes animal testing can be beneficial, but he also goes into detail about other ways in which the same testing can be done with little or no use of whole living animals. The process of in vitro can be utilized in order to study different drugs on individual colonies of cells as opposed to whole organisms (Goldberg). This is really important in backing up the argument that animals should not be used as test subjects, especially if there is a way around…
