The Inhumane Treatment Of Animals

No one knows what life looks like through the eyes of someone else. The world can be a cold, dark place, especially for animals. Animals cannot tell people “that hurts,” or “I’m hungry,” or even “I’m still alive.” Unfortunately, animals suffer everyday. “Neglect and abandonment are the most common forms of companion animal abuse in the United States” (“25 Facts About Animal Cruelty”). Not only is there abuse, there is also animal testing, inhumane treatment in the food industry, and so much more. Animals are treated as if they are toys, being manipulated by individuals. However, without the use of animals, where would the advancement of medicine be? Everyday, animals are slaughtered to put food on the table. But, where is the line drawn from abuse to a necessity? Mice, monkeys, dogs, and rabbits are among the large variety of animals that are used. These animals are locked in cages for long periods of time. They are injected, shaved, and burned to test products and medications. People do not want to go through testing and experimentations due to the amount of risks that come with them. Therefore, if humans do not want to be in pain, why would animals? However, there are two sides to animal testing: Suffering to an animal, but beneficial to a human. There is no law in the United States that forces laboratories to test on animals (“Animal Testing 101”). So the pain these animals have to live with is unjustified. By now, millions of cosmetic experiments have already taken place. That should mean that scientists know what is harmful and what is not. But, a human and a rabbit are completely different.
