WE1: CAREER PATHWAYS & PROGRESSION

In this assignment I will be evaluating 4 possible careers within the Environmental and Land-based industries. I have chosen the ANIMAL CARE sector, as this is where I would possibly like to have a future career. Being uncertain with career paths, I like the Animal Care path as it’s a flexible path that can branch off into many different job opportunities while providing the valuable experience of working with a variety of different animals.

CAREER PATH 1 – TRAINER:
A trainer’s job is to teach an animal to become familiar with human contact, essentially teaching them to behave a certain way and to respond to specific commands. Trainers need to be patient and have qualified knowledge of animal behaviour and

As far as progression goes, examples for the police dog handler is that they could switch to a military-based role, vice-versa. A police dog handler can also become the head of canine services or even progress to a role which doesn’t relate to animals.

Trainers can also be self-employed and have their own business; they can either hold group lessons or one-to-one lessons (one-to-ones are usually “mobile” and travel to the client’s location). Some can even become famous. Famous well-known examples of animal trainers and behaviourists are Cesar Millan (The Dog Whisperer) and Jackson Galaxy (My Cat from Hell).

CAREER PATH 2 – GROOM:
Groomers are somewhat like beauticians, except they specialise in working on animals instead of people. The services a groomer can offer are fur/mane trimmings and styling, teeth cleaning and claw/hoof clippings. A groom will usually specialise grooming a specific animal. Due to the nature of the job (being up close and personal with the animal), grooms are also responsible for keeping an eye out for any physical abnormalities such as wounds, rashes and

With the trainer role, I have an interest in learning about animal behaviour and enjoy watching various documentaries about them (ex: The Dog Whisperer, My Cat from Hell, and Spy in the Wild). The downside is that training can be a more difficult role to get into without proper experience. However with the animal care worker role, it will give me more experience working with different animals as individuals. The only aspect of the role that will be difficult is dealing with situations that could be upsetting, however helping a vulnerable animal in need is something I consider the greater good. Out of my two choices, I would choose the animal care worker as I want to gain more experience and confident before moving onto a more complicated role. The animal care worker role is flexible and has more opportunities to branch off into different areas of environment and land-based industries sector (should something else catch my
