Humans make several choices a day whether it’s when to eat, what to eat, who to speak with and so on. Unlike humans, animals in captivity have little to no choices in their daily lives because most of their alternatives are made for them by their human caretakers. Due to the lack of control, animals in captivity may develop learned helplessness. This phenomenon learned helplessness is when a person, or a nonhuman ape, internalizes the idea that his or her actions have no effect on the environment. Human caretakers are now finding ways to give some control back to animals by giving them choices in their daily lives and this is highly emphasized throughout the reading.…

Those who favor consumption defend their belief with testimony of ignorance, claims of non-involvement, and tradition. Opponents of this consumption defend their belief by citing instances where human consumption of animals and their byproducts have adversely affected the environment and permitted the mistreatment of factory farmed animals. Once the animals are released into the wild they are subject to predators and poachers. These animals will expect their food to be given to them, and this might cause them to eventually starve to death. If you kill a human, you are going to be charged with murder. But it’s not the same for animals. If you kill an animal you’re charged with animal cruelty. With animal cruelty you only go to jail for between 6 months and 10 years, depending where you’re from, but if you kill a human you could go to jail for life. In my opinion those who kill or abuse animals should be charged with murder or attempted murder.…
