I’d say most us have been to a zoo or an aquarium right? I’m sure all of you were amazed and captivated by all the exotic animals that the park had to offer. But I’m sure most of you don’t realize that these animals are basically given the same amount of rights as prisoners. These animals are stripped away from their natural habitats and are put into enclosed areas where they are limited to things that are important and natural to them such as running, roaming, flying, climbing, foraging, choosing a mating partner, and being with others of their own kind. Sounds more like a prisoner to me, don’t you think? I believe that animal captivity is wrong and damaging to animals because it takes them away from their natural way …show more content…
CBS News says, “They’re taken out of their biological comfort zone and the way they actually live in the wild and forced into these artificial enclosures on concrete, behind bars”. This is wrong and unethical due to the fact that these animals are taken away from their families and are forced to live alone in isolated habitats. Because of this, most animals start to suffer from zoochosis, a term used to describe animals that are in extreme depression and related psychological conditions as they struggle with the confinement of their new ‘home’. In a study done by wildlife.org, “In a 2001 study of 257 captive Giraffe and Okapi in 49 US institutions, it was found that 80% exhibited some form of stereotypic behavior.” This study shows that 80% of the animals that were held in captivity were diagnosed with some kind of sociological or psychological effect. And the causes for these stereotypic behavior? Separation from their natural habitats, loss of social contact with their species group, being directly controlled, small caging spaces, drugs that are given to them to control fertility, etc… Putting animals in captivity is morally incorrect because it takes away the animal’s lifestyle and who the animal really …show more content…
Animals that are in confined are more likely to attack trainers than in the wild. In an article written by Los Angeles Times, it talks about a tiger incident in San Francisco that led to 1 death and 2 injuries. It says, “A female Siberian tiger killed in a hail of police gunfire after fatally mauling a man at the San Francisco Zoo on Christmas Day 2007 likely was provoked into leaping and clawing out of its enclosure” Animals being preserved in wildlife parks are not only endangering people’s lives but also endangering the animal’s life. The incident that happened on christmas day led to the death a siberian tiger, an animal that is considered an highly endangered species right now. I recently watched a film called “Blackfish” directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite was about how the killer whales in SeaWorld are actually treated behind the scenes of the shows. The movie based on the true story about a whale named Tilikum that has took the lives of several trainers due to behavioral issues. You might go on and think ‘ wow what a stupid and dangerous animal ‘, but imagine living a enclosed tank your whole life doing nothing but training to amuse a crowd of people that can care less about what goes on behind the scenes. I’m pretty sure you would go insane as well. This film helps us understand the problems with wildlife parks,
