The dogs were then abandoned when they became too weak, ill, or old to work” (“Reference”). Animal Abuse has a range of different definitions, but one that stuck out was “Animal cruelty encompasses a broad range of behaviors harmful to animals” (“Animal Cruelty”). This definition narrows down the term for animal abuse. It helps witnesses be able to point out what should be seen as animal abuse. Some states still have yet to think of animal abuse as a federal crime. “There are no federal cruelty laws; the Animal Welfare Act is the only federal law that governs the humane care, handling, treatment, and transportation of some animals in certain situations” (“Animal Cruelty”). This simply means that people do not see how serious animal abuse is. Owners who abuse their pets should be given more than just a slap on the hand. The story line creates a bittersweet realization of the dangers faced by animals as a result to human activities in the wild” (“Winter”). For example, in the movie it revolves around a dolphin getting trapped by a fisherman’s crab trap. The plot gives the effects of animal cruelty in a different aspect than what some people interpret. The idea that Winter was able to live and make the best of what happened is a miracle. Most animals that get trapped in crab traps are unlikely to survive and the fact that she was able to is mindblowing. She may have lost her tail, but that does not stop her. The impression that Winter leaves a person with is that “she is an optimistic, very intelligent, very mischievous, wonderful, bright, juvenile animal who has a lot of lessons to teach about perseverance” (“Charles”). This just shows how high spirited she is even after the devastation. It is
