With the World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics showing that a person commits suicide every 40 seconds, South West Regional Health Authority chairman Anil Cosine says it is especially important for religious leaders to be trained to spot mental health problems.
At a training session on Psychological and Mental Health First Aid for pundits and temple leaders, Cosine also revealed that the average suicide rate in T&T was 13 per 100,000 people. As leaders, he said they interact with people regularly to assist with a variety of problems. With the SWRHA being the large region in the country, it is projected that 1,200 people will be seeking psychiatric treatment this year.
