Anhydrous ammonia is a key ingredient in the production of meth, the highly addictive, central nervous system stimulating drug. Meth has a high potential for abuse and dependence, and is very easy to make when utilizing anhydrous ammonia.
Two tankers that remain at the crash site still have anhydrous ammonia inside of them. These tankers are now under further attention following signs of attempted theft of the train's chemical contents. The attempted theft occurred last night.

No suspects were found at the scene and no arrests were made. Police are taking finger prints of the items left behind.
The scene was being guarded around the clock, but Sheriff Alice Tompkins says she wants to step up patrols in order to prevent future attempts of theft. She is also worried that attempted theft may cause the tankers to begin leaking again, which could lead to further injuries and death.
"We will now be more vigilant than ever in our protection of these tankers," Tompkins said. "Any attempted theft could lead to another leak, and we will not let that happen."
The attempted theft of the anhydrous ammonia also brings to mind the concern of meth production in Dane County. Even if this source of ammonia is protected and removed, Sheriff Tompkins worries about other sources of ammonia at farms and distribution centers in the area.
"Take advantage of available resources to learn how to protect your stores of ammonia," Tompkins said. "These criminals cannot gain access to ingredients used in meth production, and we will do all we can to prevent the theft of ammonia from this scene and other scenes in Dane
