Angry Feminist Stereotypes

Decent Essays
This article is about Feminism, and how when a woman stands up for something she believes in that happens to be against a man, even if he did something offensive, she is placed in the angry feminist stereotype. The article started with a woman explaining that a man she is friends with on facebook posted a photo that declared womens 'proper place' in the world. Which she responeded with a comment that said she hoped that wasnt how he conducted his relationships with women. To which another man responded with yet another derogatory line. She wanted to respond but thought otherwise of it because he friends had already told her that she just needed to let things like that go. why do women need to let things that offend them go or they will be considered

Black feminism, a term not recognized by many, is a form of feminism that fights to include African-American women in the conversation of women equality and explain how our race, gender, class and other identity markers shapes our experience with societal institutions. Patricia Collins, an African-American woman who encourages intersectionality, discusses suppression of black feminism, and believes social change can only occur through uniting women, and men, of all walks of life to work towards one common goal. We will examine two pieces of literature and put it into conversation with Collins perspective of symbolic and institutional dimensions of oppression. Stereotypes are derived from a group of people. They describe how a person or race is perceived. The stereotype of an “angry black woman” is identified by her attitude and her body language. Most African American women are accused of being an “angry black woman” just for expressing their own opinion. This stereotype of the black woman is consistent because it has been around for so long and is constantly being portrayed through the media.…

The ideal of feminism has been tainted over the years. Both men and women have criticized feminism; they accused the movement as victimizing men and putting women on a pedestal, some people even accuse the movement as a threat to the family unit. People theorized that if a woman were to work the children would become dysfunctional. Other stereotypes of feminism received from both men and women are; feminist hates men, lesbians, ugly women, angry women, and that only women are feminist. Though we can’t deny that some of these stereotypes could be true it doesn’t apply to all…

Bad Feminist Roxane Gay writes a book, “Bad Feminist”, where she breaks the stereotype of feminists to inform the public what it signifies to be a feminist. She explains to the readers that she is a “bad feminist because I never want to be placed on a Feminist Pedestal” (Gay xi). This “Feminist Pedestal” she mentions throughout the book is a figurative symbol that depicts the women who ought to be flawless since they are the face of feminism, yet whenever they do something wrong, “we knock them right off and then say there’s something wrong with feminism” (Gay x).…

Often times, people perceive women as weak - it's seen in the fairytales with the dainty damsel in distress, waiting for a man to save her, as seen even in modern takes of stories like Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty. This sort of submissive take on females has been told over and over since the beginning of our history when men hunted and left women to give birth and gather fruits. The weakness of women has been woven into story after story, until we believe it to be a universal truth and allow men to take dominant roles in society. After all, men like Prince Charming are perceived to be stronger for a reason - men generally have more of the hormone testosterone, which increases muscle mass and makes them look stronger. Women tend to develop more estrogen than testosterone, and naturally less muscle mass than men while being more emotionally vulnerable due to menstrual periods (they are also more prone to depression than males).…

Every day I get guys that want to get my number wanting to chill and hang out because they either seen me in person or a picture of me. Out of the 7 guys that wanted to get my number 5 of them hit my phone up because they want more than a conversation. Being known as the girl from New York that is thick with no boyfriend guys have an assumption that I would like to mess with them. It’s sad that this society downgrades us females. The first false feminist assumption is in their crazy heads, they have concocted a fantasy land of oppression, where men are going out of their way to treat women like objects out of some sense of personal hatred or vendetta towards them or because they are scared of commitment.…

This is the use of stereotyping that generalises all women and makes it difficult for her to be seen as anything else. When a woman declares herself as a feminist, the image immediately precedes her. This image is portrayed as "bra-burning fanatics with short hair and arm pits which look like they have got someone put into a permanent headlock" (Hughes, 1998, p.8). In both cases, it is really just a human being asking for same rights as everyone else, and she's acquiring masculine qualities to do it. In this case, the women's experience is being labelled by an image that is generalised, and used to instil fear into men with the thought that they may lose…

The media has always been a commonplace for feminists and their opinions and beliefs, but even more so recently. Feminism strives for “equality” with men, but oftentimes the media can distort this view. Due to many feminists taking the goal of equality to the point of hating on the male population, the views of feminists have become negative. The media presents a mistaken impression on feminism, which induces the hatred towards feminists, which then only encourages these feminists to expose their hateful actions and words even more.…

In an idealistic Britain, there would be no prejudice towards people who society labels as, “different.” Sadly, this is not the case. Even in this modern day and age, there is a huge amount of discrimination towards minorities living in Britain, showing more in some areas than others. On the other hand, if we compare our country to its attitude towards minorities 10 or 20 years ago it has improved drastically. But one thing is clear; we have a long way to go to reach that utopian society where there is no discrimination towards any minority.…

The article I chose to analyze is called “You Don’t Hate Feminism. You Just Don’t Understand It,” and it is about how different people have reacted to feminism. It starts off by introducing a group called Women Against Feminism. Basically, this is a group of women who are using social media (such as Facebook and Tumblr) to showcase other women and the reasons why they 're against feminism. You can go onto their Facebook page and see pictures of women holding up signs explaining why they don 't need feminism and most of the reasons are just embarrassing.…
