In the documentary Bird by Bird, the most important thing Anne Lamott says about writing is that when you are writing you are writing on borrowed time. It’s true that people’s lives are very short in comparison to the duration of the entire world. Human existence is a small blip on the timeline of the earth, but to us it feels much longer and far more significant. Channeling that idea of human existence down to just one person, it almost feels like your life is on a deadline and you have to work fast to get the things you want to do done. Some people might even feel compelled to focus on only one thing and do that for their whole lives.…

Gone Home is a narrative exploration game by the company Fullbright that stars Kaitlin Greenbriar returning to her family home after being overseas. Gone Home is often questioned on the complexity of its game play, and is often thought to be more of an interactive story, however it does fulfill the requirements of a game and I will be discussing various game play mechanics in Gone Home such as the different objects and their attributes, rules for game play and the overall design that help to support the narrative, as well as how all of this is used to create an effective story and why this is the best medium for such a story. I will start by giving the briefest of summaries; the game opens with Kaitlin, who we control in a first person perspective, returning home to a locked house all set in the 90s Their is a note left…

It was until I entered my first year of high school that I truly understood the beauty of video gaming. I was captivated by the fact that videogames could allow users to role play as certain characters and bring the story to life. It created a unique platform for friends to connect. Inspired by this new understanding, I decided that I wanted to create my own game.…

Back in September we got told about our I.B. project and were given some example ideas. None of them seemed appealing to me, and I thought about what to do, I had so many ideas of what to do and found the one that best suited me which was to create a video game and have people play it around the world. I knew video games from the back of my mind so to create my very own video game and have people play it would be outstanding. Although it did have a flaw, I had no experience in making video games. I had a general idea of what to do but not enough to get me far.…
