“The Boy Who Was Raised As a Dog” by Dr. Bruce D. Perry is an extraordinary book following many cases of child trauma that Dr. Perry has worked on. In each of its 10 chapters it describes one child who experienced trauma and how it affected them and Dr. Perry tries to find out why they turned out the way they did. It is really interesting as he isn’t trying to prove or disprove anything, he just is figuring out how experiences when you are young can affect you later on. Even though most people don’t experience things like this it helps him to better understand the human mind and human reaction to trauma.…
Author of Touching Spirit Bear, Petey, and Ghost of Spirit Bear, Ben Mikaelsen has written many novels and won many awards, “such as the Spur Award from the Western Writers of America, Inc., and the Children’s Book Award from the International Reading Association, both in 1991 and both for the book Rescue Josh McGuire” (Benson, Sonia).” Mikaelsen bases his stories from mostly his own experiences. He says, ‘I can go to libraries and get a lot of my research, but I’ve never found the soul of my story in a library. Not until I was laying awake at 4:00 in the morning trying to bottle-feed a cub that was almost starved to death. In that struggle--...…
In A child called “it”, Dave Pelzer states “Childhood should be carefree, playing in the sun; not living a nightmare in the darkness of the soul.” (Pelzer, 1995, pg.98) As he reminisces on the traumatic and horrific childhood experiences, he was forced to partake in the hands of his abusive mother. Dave Pelzer is a survivor of one of the worst child maltreatment cases in the history of California. The “Pelzer” family lived in Daly City, California. Dave’s father, Stephen Joseph supported the family by working as a firefighter.…

Children are incapable of avoiding poverty by virtue of their relative’s socioeconomic status, because they are reliant on assistance from others. The experience of poverty in childhood contributes significantly to a person’s subsequent health and wellbeing (Davidson, 2014). Growing up in relative poverty, unable to acquire the minimum average standard of living, can lead children to suffer higher incidences of adverse health because of exposure to countless hardships. In Heather O’Neill’s novel Lullabies for Little Criminals, she demonstrates the powerful impact social determinants of health can have on Canadian’s quality of life. In the case of Baby, growing up in a low-income family added stressful dynamics to the relationships she had,…
Storytelling is a way to communicate to society in a way that creates a relatable instance such that the reader can see themselves, or a version of themselves, within the story. Storytelling also is a way to demonstrate the struggles of other individuals within a society that a reader my not experience directly, but can nonetheless gain a broader understanding of different struggles within society. Although there are many ways to utilize storytelling techniques, I will apply the approach of Rites of Passage to three of the novels we’ve read this semester. The Rites of Passage that I will be analyzing are those within the stories, Houseboy, Woman at Point Zero, and A Walk in the Night. In these stories I will argue that through the characters ', Toundi, Firdaus, and Willieboy, Rites of Passage there is a physical altercation that caused a stunt in their ability to grow emotionally as a character, thus disabling them to continue to their ultimate stage of their reincorporation into society.…

In this paper, I will examine Brenda Medina’s story known as Hell and How I Got Here through a criminological angle. I shall summarize Medina’s story, present a simplistic format of the theories I believe were in play in her story, and then connect those theories with her story. Additionally, I want to note that I will only disclose the theories that I consider to have been the most prominent in Medina’s story, since, there is a large number of theories that can rationalize what happened; but perhaps not as apparent. Brenda Medina’s story prior to the arrest started when she was around six years old living with her parents and many siblings in a hostile family setting, she would deal with her brother’s pranks and her mom’s vile actions to…
The child although becomes skeptic after a certain point. He refuses to believe that the stories the father tells of helpful and chivalrous fold are true and he becomes doubtful that they are the “good guys” and are “carrying the fire”. When a thief steals their belongings and his father catches and punishes the thief by stripping him naked of his clothes and shoes, in the splintering cold of the landscape The Road is set in, the boy literally pleads and begs his father to let the thief go and even starts crying because he understands the need and hurt of others and doesn’t want him punished because he was starving and did what he thought he should do and also did not try to hurt them physically (McCarthy 96). The boy doesn’t understand the need for the “good guys” to hurt anyone even if they themselves try to hurt the boy and his father because then to the boy there will be no real difference between them and the “bad guys” that he has come to know. He at one point becomes doubtful of whether they are good or not and does not feel good committing these acts of survival, according to his father, and feels complicit in them when his father does…
