Compare And Contrast Angelina Sandoval

We have read two short stories about two individuals that are going through the same transitions in life, but the two ways in which the transition is made are completely different. Even with similar backgrounds the decisions that are made by Dave and Angelina are far from the same. The point in which they are in their lives are also contrasting, but both their goals revolve around independence. To evaluate both Angelina and Dave is to compare and contrast their upbringings, how they choose to proceed in navigating through their lives, and how these two form methods in becoming an individual. Angelina Sandoval is the eldest child in a family of immigrants from Mexico. The Mexican culture is very dependent upon the first born being a male. This tradition was set before there was an Angelina and she was just to deal with the “awkwardness” associated with her being a female. Angelina knew from an early time that her younger brother, “the family pride” would always come first. He uses a gun to make up for what he lacks in confidence not only from others but in himself. Dave draws power from having a gun in his possession even when “empty”. From that I conclude that the message is a coming of a certain age, where you want change type of story. Dave wants to be treated in a certain manner even though he is not ready for the responsibility that goes along with the title of a Man. In “Angelina Sandoval”, we have Angelina who seeks courage to let others view upon her opinions. She has never felt right about being “out looked” in comparison to her brother; nothing was ever said about it though. When Gregorio dies and their parents are still putting him on a ridiculous pedestal, Angelina gets fed up. This is the last straw, which gives Angelina the courage to speak up for herself and subsequently to leave her
