It would often rain and flood the streets in the town. “Above all we were wet.” Pg. 11 In this quote, Frank was showing his horrible circumstances of life that never seemed to improve. Even with no food or clothing to make a bad situation even worse, they had to deal with tons of rain. They would have to pick up coal off the ground, but Frank’s dad didn’t want to be beggars. “Och, no, son. We won’t pick coal off the road. We’re not beggars.” page 69 Franks mom, Angela got mad that Frank’s dad didn’t bring back coal. Angela took the kids out with bags and picked up coal form the ground herself. The difference between Frank’s mom and dad was their idea of what is “pride”. Frank’s mom was more concerned about surviving while his dad worried about how he was judged by other people. He tries to do things to help his situation. His decisions are both just and unjust kinds of choices. An example of an unjust choice was when he went to work shoveling coal and almost became blind because he wanted to be the provider for the family. “They can’t afford new bandages everyday so she keeps washing them old over and over till they’re grey.” Pg. 257 His intentions are good but he still was an immature child. Frank thought he was being helpful, but he ended up making his mother look bad. She is more concerned about the money Frank is making from his job than his health. The doctor judges her as a bad mother, criticizing her for having money to smoke cigarettes, but no money to buy clean badges. “I want the job. I want to bring home the shilling. I want to be a man.” Frank is obsessed with having such a good job. He thinks he’s better than everyone and people are jealous. It takes his elderly boss to notice that he needs to stop and his new job is to be a “student”. He doesn’t want Frank to have his way of life as a hard labor worker with long
