Angela Vicario was a beautiful young girl brought up to be a proper woman. Her name sounds like “Angel” which implies that she is beautiful, meek, and intelligent. Her mother raised her and her sisters so that they were prepared for marriage. Yet despite her upbringing Angela loses her virginity before marriage to a man who is not her husband. Angela seems to regret her actions and is burdened with the guilt. She wants to tell her mother in hopes that she will be relieved of her troubles but “her only two confidantes….dissuaded her from her good intentions” (Pg. 38) Due to her youth and inexperience, Angela is still rather innocent and naive so she easily believes that she can keep her dishonor a secret. I had never heard of “Cristela” before having to watch it for class. The first two episodes are quite comical and I was sorry to read on IMDB that the show only aired for one season before being canceled. An interesting fact about “Cristela” is that Cristela Alonzo, the star of the show, “is the first Latina to create, produce, write, and star in her own primetime comedy” (“All Jokes Aside,” 2014). Another fact about the show is that every single character is based off someone that Cristela Alonzo knows (Saraiya, 2014).…

Pietro Germi’s Divorzio all’italiana is a satirical comedy from 1962 that was based on the novel Un delitto d 'onore. Although it was originally a romantic story, Germi adopted it into t a story made so dramatic that it turned into a tragicomedy. To contribute to the humor of the film, portrayal of the rigid gender roles is seen along with the strict Catholic principles in Italian Society in the 1960s. Divorzio all’italiana presents gender roles by showing the premarital expectations of women, a man’s role in defending his family’s honor, and male masculinity.…

In his memoir, Angela’s Ashes, Frank McCourt, the protagonist and narrator, encounters various conflicts, many of which involve in his Aunt Aggie. Aunt Aggie is Angela’s sister and one of the many antagonists in the story. She is a miserable woman who resents the fact Angela married Malachy, a jobless, alcoholic Northerner, and she takes that resentment out on her American nephews. At one point, Grandma offers the children porridge, but Aunt Aggie feels she is being taken advantage of: “I don’t know why I have to pay for Angela’s mistakes” (72). Aunt Aggie cannot have children of her own, and she is jealous of her “useless” sister’s big family (73).…

The morning in which Bayardo returns Angela to her house forms one instance that displays masculinity as a source of power. Márquez narrates that Bayardo “grabbed her [Angela] by the arm and brought her into the light. Her satin dress was in shreds and she was wrapped in a towel up to the waist. Pura Vicario thought they’d gone off the road in the car and were lying dead at the bottom of the ravine” [46]. Pura Vicario’s intense reaction to the sight of Angela’s state can only suggest that Bayardo had beaten Angela and torn her dress in his fury at discovering her lack of virginity.…

Abraham Lincoln once said, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years.” My mother-in-law, Kathy Litke, lived this quote every day. She was an extraordinary woman who shared her many positive traits with those around her through both her words and actions. She aspired to please others and inspired those of us who knew her to follow her example. My full name is Amber Hartlee Webb, proudly named after my Aunt Amber, my great uncle Hartley, and my father whose middle name is Hartley also. Born and raised on a ranch out in the middle of nowhere, I was really isolated. Only having my three older sisters to play with, I would've rather played by myself. So I grew up. I learned right and wrong easily by the threatening end of a belt and I quickly found out being respectful was a easy way to make others respect you.…

The first similarity is that Antonia and Janie are both depreciated first in their youth, which explicitly depicts the scene of the anti-immigration, a severe historical reality against to ideas of New World Pastoral, which is a romanticized and idealized version of immigrants of American. When Antonia talks to Jim about her whole family migrated to America for a richer life and how her father ended his life because of language barriers, unfamiliar farming skills and more important, homesickness, Jim, surprisingly, comments to her:” People who don’t like this country ought to stay at home, we don’t make them come here.” After Antonia leaving, he even hopes that snooping girl would never come to see them anymore. In my own opinion I would believe Antonia would, but also would not agree with this. She is a very stubborn person who see’s that happiness is beauty in itself, while being a good thing, but I don’t think she would describe it the same way Jim does. She is much more stern than he is in the book, or at least, I believed her to be. While Jim is kind and a sort-of playful spirt, he likes to see the good in all things, and people. He knows their can be happiness is everyone, they just have to find it on their own.…

Women are confined to household duties because women are expected to follow the oppressing gender roles that the town has implemented on them. María Alejandrina Cervantes runs the whore house of the town. She represents the few women that are independent and defy gender roles. Even though María has the freedom that very few women are able to obtain, her freedom cost her her respect in the town as the next quote shows. The narrator states, “According to what they told me years later, they had begun by looking for him at María Alejandrina Cervantes’s place, where they had been with him until two o’clock.…
