Since it’s creation we have been oppressing people and taking away their human rights. As time has passed oppression has evolved itself, as Angela Davis says “and it was true in those days; those were some of the ways in which women were oppressed. (Angela Davis, Social Protest Pg. 23) The dictionary definition of oppression is as follows; Prolonged cruel or unjust treatment. Now I would assume everyone can agree on the oppression of minorities and women before the woman and civil right movements. These are the worst years of American history when it comes to oppression the years of slavery endured and decades of strict gender roles. As time continued to pass and laws changed and social outlooks began to change oppression changed with it. This is solely because of how the republican party drew the districts so specifically to their advantage.(David Daley, NPR.org) So we know that it is being done clearly because we can look at the numbers and logically just know that those numbers don’t work out.. Now how could that function of our government be used to target a specific group of people? Well first of the United States Census offers all of the information the individuals drawing the lines would ever need, including your race and where you live. With just this information and the ability to draw the districts you could create major changes to the political battle. Another function that has been corrupted in recent years is the idea of majority minority districts. These districts have been implemented to try and combat gerrymandering, but it has only worked against that minority. Although some good may have come from them, now instead it works to oppress them further because those districts can now be drawn into other
