Anesthetizing The Drosophila Flies

Decent Essays
As a group we have taken two sterile plastic vials and placed a cup of Drosophila medium powder into each one. After adding a cup of the medium with added half a cup of distillated water into the plastic vial, which allowed the medium to dissolve into it. We allowed a few minutes for the media to be absorbed and afterwards we applied a cotton plug to close the entrance to the vial.
Anesthetizing the Drosophila flies In the lab, we had the fruit flies already asleep in a green bucket filled all the way up with ice. The purpose of the ice in the bucket is a way to put the fruit flies to sleep for a certain amount of time till they warm up again and wakes up. Having the fruit flies being asleep makes it easier for us to work with the flies and

The experiment was conducted in an enclosed environment (choice chamber), which helped to maintain the constants. The integrity of the control (water) was maintained by using an eye dropper to carefully place the water into the selected chamber to test the effects. There were no major complications during the experiment. The biggest complication was the lack of movement from the pillbugs which may have made the…

It took the longest because we had to prepare the solutions with different measurements of sucrose and water for each one. We released all 20 bugs into the center chamber and watched them wander around until they started to settle in one area. After the 10 minutes was up, the most pillbugs were in the solution made with a concentration of 15 g of sucrose and 35 mL of water. We discerned that the bugs showed a reaction to chemotaxis since there was no water, but they were attracted to the solutions that were made with more water. The two most popular chambers were those of 15 g of sucrose and 35 mL of water, and 20 g of sucrose with 50 mL of water.…

They were fed rabbit blood that was kept at a temperature of 37 degrees Celsius. This temperature was maintained because the blood was immersed in a water bath that circulated. The membrane that was used for the blood to be sucked through was a parafilm-membrane. The selected bugs were kept at a controlled humidity and temperature. These bugs were tested at different stages of life as listed: species of both male and female adults and nymphs that were at third and fourth phase of molting.…

First, in order for this experiment to be conducted, a test chamber was needed to act as the place where the experiment happened. First, the premier action that had to done was to move the pill bugs from their artificial habit to the test chamber by using a stick or a paint brush to carefully move them onto a petri dish, repeated for each of the pill bugs that had been used in the experiment. Then, simultaneously, filter papers were placed on each spot of the two areas, one staying dry and the other absorbing water from pipette, therefore, effectively becoming damp and moist compared to the dry one. Then, spontaneously, the pill bugs were released into the middle area between the two spots, thus, having an equal chance of going either way,…

The simple but revolutionary organism Drosophila melanogaster has intricate properties that are studied to find its relations with human genes. Not only is D. melanogaster a model organism for its rapid growth, inexpensive culturing, and easy modifications, the Drosophila can provide more in-depth scientific analysis that can solve human diseases. The model organism D. melanogaster is studied to find ground-breaking research in neurology, sleep, cancer, and drug discovery. The multivariable effects in cancer can be studied by observing D. melanogaster because of its tumorigenesis caused by genes and its surrounding environment. The development of tumors in D. melanogaster is similar to the pathway of a tumor in a mammalian cell as it undergoes…

The main objective of this lab is to determine if fruit flies are attracted to rotten apples. The experiment focuses on the chemotaxis of fruit flies in response to small amounts rotten apple juice. We hypothesised that if the fruit flies were exposed to rotten apples, then they would have a positive chemotaxis because they are attracted to the mold and bacteria on the rotten apple and also recognize that it's a source of glucose. The first part of the investigation involved evenly distributing the fruit flies into the choice chamber and exposing them to the rotten apple juice and water. To see if they had positive chemotaxis we placed about 10 drops of the juice on the cotton ball and 10 drops distilled water on another cotton ball.…

The basic foundation of the ADH concept is that there is a fixed quantity of metabolic activity, which is correlated with time and temperature, necessary to complete development, which is not reflective of the true developmental patterns found experimentally. While Myskowiak and Doums (2002) briefly address the difference between diapause and quiescence, they never return to the concept or really explain its significance in context with the relationship of refrigeration and development. Ames and Turner (2003) revisit this point in their concluding remarks, suggesting that diapause, since it requires specific triggers for its activation and deactivation, is unlikely to be the physiological mechanism at work here, and instead it is likely that the flies are experiencing quiescence, indicating that it can not be assumed that no growth has occurred during cold…

An interesting idea for a biology experiment would be conducting tests on the reproduction rate of fruit flies exposed or unexposed to radiation. I believe fruit flies that have been exposed will have a lower reproduction rate versus those that have not. To prove my theory, I will assemble three groups of fruit flies; Group A will experience no radiation. Group B will experience a little radiation and Group C will experience a lot of radiation. I will be using three Mason jars with small holes poked in the top to allow fresh air for the ten flies I will encase in each of them.…
