Anesthetics: A Brief Summary And Analysis

Improved Essays
I chose this article because I’ve had 3 surgeries in my 20 years of existence, and every time, I was afraid that I was going to wake up during the procedure. I don’t why I feared such things, especially since my surgeon was a family friend and I trusted him. I just always had a fear of my general anesthesia wearing off. My surgeon always told me that there was a chance of problems, but it rarely ever happened. I am lucky that I have never experienced surgery complications. However, when I read this article, I just kept having flashbacks of my surgeries. You can usually remember the moments before the surgery before the anesthetic kicks in. Sometimes you remember the moments after the surgery when you wake up, but everything is usually a blur because you’re loopy from anesthetic drugs. …show more content…
He could not speak or move, but he does remember the terrible experience. I feel like if I were in his position, I would be very scared and probably have nightmares of the procedure. Some may say that the doctors could have just given him more anesthetic drugs so he will not wake up during the procedure, but there are risks of giving too much anesthetics to patients. Even when a patient is completely sedated and they start to wake up, an anesthesiologist may increase the anesthesia amount a little, but they do not want to overdo it. The last thing they want is complications that can be prevented. This is why hospitals require you to fill out forms to see if you had ever had health problems or conditions so that they can prescribe what is best for

Carlie Fleming Mrs. Stanley English 12 27 October 2016 An Anesthesiologist Anesthesiologists are physicians who administer and determine what type of anesthetic treatment is to be used for the patient prior to surgery, as well as positioning the patient on the operating table in a manner that will be helpful to the surgery. Following strict medical guidelines, the anesthesiologist takes into account the patient’s current health, any medications they are taking, and the type of surgery that is being performed. While the surgery is taking place, the anesthesiologist monitors the patient’s critical life functions to make sure no complications arise. After the surgery is over, the patient’s well-being has to be monitored as the anesthetic wears…

Response rate, time taken for control of shivering, recurrence rate, and adverse effects were recorded. Results: From 1127 patients; 28 patients developed grade 4 shivering, and 92 patients developed grade 3. Heart rate and blood pressure were significantly lower in Dexmedetomidine group compared to Granisetron group during the 1st hour but no evidence of severe bradycardia.…

In conclusion, Continuous spinal anesthesia was found to be a technique which has marked advantages in many clinical circumstances, such as the patient with multiple co-morbidities who needs lower body surgery in which general anesthesia and other types of Neuraxial blocks may have marked side effects on his condition. Continuous spinal anesthesia combine the benefits of both general anesthesia and other Neuraxial blocks in the term of better hemodynamic stability, minimal drug load, extension of anesthesia for long operations, accurate control over the level of the block, decreasing incidence of most intra and post-operative anesthesia related complications. Continuous spinal anesthesia can be performed effectively and safely in high-risk…

Planned Delayed Emergence Risks of early extubation may outweigh the benefits in patients with compromised clinical condition. Patients with impaired baseline level of consciousness, poor airway control, prolonged (> 6hours) or complicated surgery, unstable intraoperative hemodynamics or ventilation difficulties, and increased brain swelling are some of the clinical situations where planed delayed recovery should be considered.17 Other considerations may include surgery involving eloquent areas of the brain, significant brain ischemia, and posterior fossa lesions. Cai et al reported a rate of 49.8% of delayed extubation out of 800 patients.46 Although data may be limited, the criteria for delayed extubation after intracranial surgery have been described in reviews and observational prospective studies.37,46 If a planned delay of the emergence has been decided, the possibility of a brief awakening in order to perform a short neurological assessment is a common practice among physicians.…

I believe when Mrs. Haskell speaks about her son, Lewis, it provides her the strength and the courage she needs to focus on her quest to improve communication skills and health care for other patients and families. The congenital defect that Lewis had was pectus excavatum and I would not consider this as a minimally invasive surgery. If his condition was severe enough, his heart and lungs were effected. This deformity cost a close friend of mine his life following an accident due to the effects on his heart and lungs. The first dose of Toradol that Lewis received was in PACU and he received at 12 doses following his surgery (Acquaviva, K., Haskell, H. & Johnson, J., (2013).…

The patient and the family are normally stressed, so it is the anesthesiologist’s job to put the patient’s fears to rest and calm them down. Anesthesiologist’s try to calm people down by saying things like, “The way you go into surgery is the way you come out” (Dr. Dubrow Botched). That means if you go into surgery with a positive attitude then you will come out well and will heal quickly. To help with the positive attitude, some anesthesiologist’s have to sometimes give people an injection that puts them in a state of fuzziness or it puts them half way asleep. It can be called “happy juice.”…

Since the main purpose of general anesthetics were to help patients who were suffering from some sort of pain as a pain reliver to induce unconsciousness for some surgical or medical procedures. The effects were purely similar for local anesthetics as well just not administered properly that can result in more harm than benefits. As mentioned in the textbook cocaine being considered a local anesthetic this main difference between cocaine is that when it does enter the bloodstream it reaches the brain rapidly. It also has an inhibitory effect, reduces normal activity in the brain. While producing euphoria and excitement because of dopamine the inhibition on the cortex.…

Introduction Volatile inhaled anesthetics are commonly used for general anesthesia worldwide because of their fast action and easy management. However, there is accumulating evidence indicating that general anesthetics that activate gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) receptors induce widespread apoptosis at a clinically relevant concentration in the developing brain of rodents [1, 2, 3]. Furthermore, anesthetic administration in children causes long-term impairments of cognitive behavior later in adulthood [4, 5, 6], raising concerns about the clinical use of general anesthetics in pediatric medicine. Long term cognitive dysfunction after neonatal anesthetic exposure has been reported in the behavioral experiments using rodents. They includes…
