“Anyone undergoing surgery that involves being put into a drug-induced sleep comes into contact with an anesthesiologist”(Kaskinoro). The definition of an anesthesiologist is a physician who administers anesthesia prior to, during, or after surgery or other medical procedures.
The first known uses of anesthesia date back to the aborigines when they used the pituri plant to help numb the pain of the injury. The pain was numbed by chewing in the pituri plant’s stem and leaf. The university also has one of the most challenging anesthesiology courses in the world, as well as one of the lowest acceptance rates in the nation. Most anesthesiologists study math, anesthesiology, science, and chemistry.Anesthesiologists study math to learn how to calculate the amount of anesthesia to give to the patient. The study of science and chemistry is because you need to know what is going on with the chemicals in the anesthesia. Gary Shanks is the head of anesthesiologists in the Central Texas area and works with Baylor Scott & White Health. He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists(ASA) and a member of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists(TSA). He has a board certification from the Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Shanks graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City, IA, with a degree in anestheisology in 1994. Dr. Shanks has also recieved the Healthgrades Honor Roll award from the American Society of Anesthesiologists.Dr. Shanks began college by studying law but then he met his future wife and he swithched over to anesthesiology because he had already learned how to work in an office. He enjoyed studying anesthesiology and then switched his major over to anesthesiology.
