Why I Burned?

Improved Essays
It was a Monday morning and I was in the shower getting ready to start my day when I started to smell something abnormal, though, I thought it was simply the neighbor outside smoking but once I opened the bath room door a big cloud of smoke cam. All of a sudden I was trapped and the only way to get out of the fire that was soon about to reach me was to walk through it if I had any intentions of living. Then I heard my cat crying and that’s when I knew I had to get my cat and myself out of the house. After planning my escape route I grabbed my cat and ran, well not thinking clearly I trip and hit my head on the end table now I’m bleeding really bad from my head and the smoke is now starting to affect me and my breath is getting shorter. I had …show more content…
Arriving at the hospital the nurses did not waste anytime I was rushed into a room and a nurse walked in she spent what felt like forever explain what her job was. She said “I’m a burn care nurse I treat patients who have been burned.” She spent more time telling me what the plan was starting from the normal treatment. She told me that my burns cover my whole feet and up my legs. Before I processed what she said before they provided me with an oxygen mask telling me that it’s only going to make sure I get enough oxygen. With all the doctors running around it’s hard to focus on what they are trying to tell me. Next thing I know I’m getting a needle shoved in my arm filled with fluids but they state it’s only to restore the fluid and electrolyte balance. Everything is happening at such a fast pace doctors then start throwing blankets onto of me but I’m not cold but they said it is to create a warm environment for the burns. While sitting there waiting for the next part more doctors run and hook up vials of clear liquid to my I.V. doctors are warning me that it’s just medicine to stop the pain and settle my anxiety. Once I was finally in bed and everyone one done swarming around me doctors would walk in and random time to see if I was still …show more content…
My burn nurse came back and checked everything over and came to tell me what the future plans are going to be. My burn nurse told me she has been talking with an anesthesiologist later that morning the anesthesiologist came to talk about the medical plan. She told me a little about herself and how she can help me she stated, “Anesthesiologists are primarily responsible for the safety and well-being of patients before, during and after surgery.” Her responsibilities include placing me in the state of controlled unconsciousness called 'general anesthesia ', the provision of 'regional anesthetics ' where only a portion of the body is made numb, when indicated for the relief of pain or anxiety. My anesthesiologist finally got to the point saying I am going to need reconstructive surgery which is also going to incorporate a skin graft. While the anesthesiologist is looking over my burns she is explaining what a skin graft consists of, she says, “it is a surgical operation in which pieces of healthy skin is transplanted to a new place of the body (Stang)”. The doctors are saying the skin graft is going to take place as soon as it can and she was going to send other doctors to come check me out. They also informed me that

A few weeks ago I had a patient that had come in for hyperglycemia, I looked at his chart and noticed he had been in our ER 5 times in the last 5 days. I also noticed that he would complain of head pain, and requested and received narcotics. Upon entering his room and introducing himself, he began stating he had a “headache”. I asked for his hand, he said what for, I then explained that there was a technique that I used on my patients that was as effective as drugs with no side affects. He gave me his hand and said that Dilaudid would be more effective for his pain, I then said can I get you a Tylenol, he followed up with, “I’m allergic!”. I am total agreement that CAM modalities can be effective and should be used, but allot of my patients come to see me for the…

It was Sunday morning and I was leaving the house for church. I got in my car just like I always do. Usually I go down the street aways and then remember to buckle my seatbelt, but today, things were different. I put my seatbelt on right after my bottom hit the car seat. As I started driving down the road, I had a lot of thoughts running through my mind. My grandmother and I were arguing again, school was stressing me out and I was going to be late for church. As all these things were swarming my head, a grey cat crossed the road. Immediately I swerved to the right to miss it, I over corrected and went into the ditch. The only thing I could think about was how I was gonna fix this, It never really occurred to me that I was wrecking my car. I swerved hard to the left to get back over on the road and hit a covert. When I hit the covert it treated my car as a ramp. My air bags popped out and I honestly thought that was the end of my life.…

Sir can you hear me! I tried to open my eyes, but it seemed as if they were glued shut. Minutes went by, and another voice requested me to open my eyes . My eyes deliberately opened up only to see the blurry apparitions of two individuals. As my vision became clearer I could identify the apparitions as two nurses, they had white slacks on, paired with white button up shirts that had the American Red Cross logo hot ironed onto the front pocket. The faded bloodstains that spotted their uniforms had me worried about what had happened. As I was stretched out on what seemed to be some type of dolly, or cradle with…

During this visit I was escourted into the room and I was told the doctor would be in shortly. The doctor suggested that she write me a prescription for medication that would increase my appetite and I agreed. At this point the doctor states she would be right back with my prescription. While I’m waiting a nurse walks in with a needle in her hand and states “that doctor wanted me to be given an injection,” and I begin to tell her that me and the doctor never discussed getting an…

This week in clinical, I was assigned a patient with a nasogastric tube. A NG tube is very painful for the patient if it is slightly moved, so I was a little nervous taking care of this patient. I walked into to the room and met with the patient and his wife. I began to ask him questions about his past medical history, his medications, and current state of being. I then took vital signs. After finishing vital signs, I realized that his pulse was 54 bmp, which is very low. So, I discussed this with the nurse and she told me that is normal pulse for this patient. I then did am care on the patient. I had to be very careful because of his NG tube, so changing the gown was the most difficult part of the procedure. The patient then stated that he wanted to go and sit in the chair.…

Some time passed enough time for the blood to all dry onto my skin, I finally felt tug and I felt the weight of the car slowly lift off me, now I felt intense pain stick my lower half. “Crawl out of there!” Someone yelled to me. Wondering before this point as to what the LPN and RN nurses did in the office since I did not see them working directly with the doctors, I learned that they have their own list of patients they see for chronic disease management and other treatments. Additional treatments are placed on their schedule as the doctors in the clinic call upon them to do treatments for patients currently in the clinic. One of the doctors I had worked with on the previous day asked me if I knew how to do an ear flush and I told her I had not done one before, but the nurse I was with said she would help me do it. She showed me the tools they used and how she mixes water, peroxide, rubbing alcohol and liquid Colace for the flush. I was then able to view the cerumen in the ear canal. After watching her flush the ear, she gave me an opportunity to try it. Quite a bit of cerumen was removed from the ear canal and the patient’s hearing improved. I was also able to observe as wound care was performed on 2 different individuals who had ulcers on their legs and feet. One wound was dry and only needed some cushioning and protection. The other wound had an open weeping area that needed skin barrier cream on the surrounding tissue, an alginate pad and a silicon protection over the open area. In our lab, we had discussed and practiced different wound care, but it was helpful to see a real wound and what techniques the nurses used to dress it. I was also able to perform several immunization injections, such as shingles, flu and hepatitis A on a teenager and on an older adult. This was my first opportunity to give intramuscular injections as I had only done subcutaneous insulin injections before. I was so able to observe as the nurse performed allergy shots. The nurse showed me the various protocols that they have and how they use sarna cream and ice packs on the injection site to reduce irritation and discomfort. I had not heard…

One day in I was helping in CT and a mentally disabled man was on the table, he had a history of seizures; in a blink of an eye the CT intern, Alyssa, waves frantically to me to get the attention of the CT technicians because this man was about to seize. I toldell the technicians that Alyssa neededs some help with the patient, quickly they ranun into the CT room and helped hold him down; then two nurses came in with a doctor and the patient's sister. The patient's sister told us that this seizure is a mild one compared to his everyday seizures. After the patient was done seizing the CT technicians started scanning his brain; one of the technicians told me she couldn’t imagine having to deal with that everyday. We had a long talk about how strong nurses are for dealing with death on a weekly/daily…

I was with my father, he was there for the fire department in case anyone got hurt, and it was cold outside, so I got in the fire truck to keep warm. All of a sudden, all of the firefighters’ pagers went off. Someone was in a car accident and they needed emergency responders. My dad didn’t have anyone to leave me with, so I had to ride in the truck to the accident. When we arrived at the scene, I remember seeing a bright, red car that was all smashed up. There was glass everywhere and lights were flashing from the police cars. My dad told me to stay in the truck while he went to help the driver that was still stuck in the car. I watched as my dad and the other firefighters took the man out of the car, put him on a stretcher, and wrapped a neck brace on him. They needed a place to put him to keep him warm while they waited for the ambulance to arrive. The firefighters had to place him in the truck that I was in, for it was the only one big enough. I remember seeing him lie there, bloody and in pain, and thinking about what the doctors were going to do and how they were going to help him. I don’t remember much after that and I still don’t know what happened to him after the ambulance got there and took him…

When the incision was about to happen at that time the nurse reminded that not to give the antibiotic because of the problems she faced after the surgery in her earlier case. If the nurse would not have been there in the earlier conversation then the doctor was about to give her a drip. In the last case, the patient was suffering from thyroid and it had to be removed because of potential cancer. She met the anesthesiologist before surgery and told him about the breathing problems she faced during her previous couple of operations and she had required additional oxygen for several weeks and in another instance she was shifted to intensive care because of lack of oxygen. However, the surgeon who was about to perform the surgery was unaware of the patients problem before they went through the checklist. At that time, the anesthesiologist told the whole story for the patient’s respiratory problem and they made arrangements to keep the patient under the observation and gave her…

The debridement of an elderly lady with third-degree burns is branded in my memory. For this procedure, the patient should be completely sedated. As they began, I noticed that anesthesia had not taken effect properly. Without a doctor present, the interns continued even though she cried out in pain. Lack of resources was indubitably the issue. On the surface, it seems as though physical…

To protect the identity of my patient who I met with during my placement, I named her as Mrs Sawyer. This is due to confidentiality (NMBA, 2008b). When I arrived at the ward at 7:00 am, the registered nurse gave us her handover report about Mrs Sawyer condition. I learnt that Mrs Sawyer was admitted to the orthopaedic ward with a right neck of femur and right now she is recovering after surgery. I’ve also learned that Mrs Sawyer was unsettled and complained of pain during the night. At 8:00 am, Mrs Sawyer called out to me and said that she feels dull pain at the surgical site and it also radiated to her knee. Walking up to her, I saw that she was pale and drown in appearance. To identify and eliminate any underlying condition that…
