Primigravia women will seek to attend antenatal classes and education due to inexperience and minimal knowledge around pregnancy and childbirth (Redshaw et al., 2007). The couple Lauren and Carl were keen to attend antenatal classes for active birth, however, due to shift pattern were unable to attend the classes. Therefore, a teaching session was offered to provide additional education support for active birth. Department of Health (DOH, 2007) state women who do not receive any antenatal education may be unable to make informed choice about treatment they wish to receive, approaching labour frightened and inexperienced of what to expect.

Planning for teaching session is a vital factor to assist the learner to develop appropriate knowledge and skills. A lesson plan was developed prior to teaching (See appendix two). Firstly, it is important educators throughout the planning stage to have an understanding of language and communication needs, I had taken all this into consideration and identify Lauren felt uncomfortable and unease within group learning session. The active birth session within the hospital are provided by group discussion. The session therefore was tailored and designed for Lauren needs to ensure interactive and learning throughout the session, as this would not be the case if she was attending a group on. Within the planning stage learning outcomes were created to provide Lauren with clear goals for the session to highlight what she should know, understand and have achieved after the session (Neary, 2000).
