Raonic entered Sunday’s Wimbledon men’s final playing at a tremendously high level, fresh off the greatest win of his career, a five-set victory over arguably the greatest tennis player of all time, Roger Federer. In the semifinal match against Federer, Raonic put on a power serving display for the ages, reaching serve speeds that hovered around 140 mph. Not known for his knifing slice backhand or an efficient net game, Raonic used both under McEnroe’s tutelage to become the first Canadian man to play for a Grand Slam title.
On the other side of the net, Murray displayed tremendous defense, sending forehands and backhands past Raonic when he dared to approach the net. Murray, the Scottish tennis star who returned Raonic’s serve better than anyone else had in the tournament, played very well off of the favorable Wimbledon crowd and turned their support into extra motivation. Most notably, in a 2-2 third set, Murray faced his first break points of the final, trailing 40-15 in the fifth game. Murray prevailed in the game, highlighted by a backhand winner and an unreturnable serve.
What rhetoric does Murray’s second Wimbledon title produce? Well, seeing him capitalize and win a tournament that he became the favorite at when Novak Djokovic went down was a welcomed sight.
