Another time the poor are treated with disrespect is when Raphael and Rat go to Senator Zapanta's house to try and get clues to solve the mystery; they have to catch a bus. Rat tells us that Raphael has a much better chance of getting them a ride because he is looks more presentable, so he should go in front and ask for the ticket. “When you look like me, you can’t even get a ride very often, not when you’re alone: you get kicked off like you’re a curse.”(p117, Mulligan, 2014). Whereas the rich would get on the bus straight away because they look respectable, and their clothes are clean so the bus driver along with everyone else just assumes they would have money. Gardo, Rat and Raphael were looking for the “brightest of lights”, they had to give up in the end. They had wasted their whole day because they were looking on the wrong side, the rich side. “The wall divides the rich quarter, where the dead get buried in earth, from the poor quarter, where the dead get stacked up in boxes.” (P180, Mulligan 2014) The wall is a physical example of the divide between the rich and the poor. Even though the poor are dead they are still treated like they were when they were alive; with disrespect and hatred. Mulligan represents this by showing how they get buried and there is an actual wall dividing the people with money from the people without.
