Andy Dufrense's Presentation Of Hope In Shawshank Redemption

In 1949, Andy Dufrense who was once a vice president of a major bank was ordered to serve 2 life sentences in Shawshank prison for a crime he did not commit- the murder of his wife and her lover. Over the years, he retains hope and eventually gains the respect of his fellow inmates whilst befriending a man called 'Red'. Together and independently they both find comfort and eventually redemption through acts of common decency and kindness. Although Andy had been deceived both by the warden, (who had killed his only potential saviour Tommy), as well as by fate itself through his conviction for a crime that he was innocent for. Throughout the film Andy maintains both his sanity and his hope for redemption. This exemplifies that the music has spoken to them- regardless whether they are able to understand the words or not. Throughout this scene hope is shown, along with something from the outside world that they can connect too despite whether they are rehabilitated or not. The lighting is also a key representation of how hope is explored throughout this scene. In other parts of the film the lighting can be described as 'low key' such as dull grey, but in this particular scene it changes to 'high key' as you’re able to see the blue sky and the whole area is lit up. A close up shot is also used to show the significance of the music played. Close up shots allow us to focus on certain objects and actions and not be distracted by the things around it. Close up shots brings deeper meaning to what is been shown. It is when Andy presses the button to play the song. This shows the importance that he chose to play a song through the speakers, regardless of the trouble he may get in. As soon as Andy presses play, the sense of freedom
