When walking into a mall you see different people from different classes. One would shop at boutiques while the others shop at outlets. However, some societies we hear about, take some measures to extreme. Class structure is harmful in Aldous Huxley novel Brave New World and Andrew Niccol Gattaca. These two show how easily people can be excluded by their societies. When examining the characters in both stories, we see that John and Vincent both think there is something wrong with their society. Yet when examining Linda and Irene we notice that both girls are obedient to society until they meet the protagonist and rebel slightly. Lastly we see that Mustapha Mond and Anton are both similar to each other because of their rules they want everyone …show more content…
Every small event or item can be a representation of something important. In Brave New World, Soma, Bottles and the Electric fence were 3 symbols represented. No one ever has a good day every single day. There are always bad days. Soma is used to take the stress and feeling or emotions away to feel happy and emotionless . Soma is also used so there wouldn't be any complication between people and everyone will say sustain, because everyone has the same attitude. Comparing to the theme class structure, when taking soma, many character/society feel relaxed and happy, yet when the soma is taken away, it would cause many disruption and balance between the caste system. “From the lift the Savage stepped out into the midst of them. But his mind was elsewhere-with death, with his grief, and his remorse; mechanicaly, without consciousness of what he was doing, he began to shoulder his way through the crowd “ (Huxley 143) John was very upset when his mother passed away, he was frustrated and furious. By destroying everything (such as throwing soma) it caused a very chaotic situation for everyone which almost made it unusual act an …show more content…
Gattaca strongly acknowledges that by having one DNA test that can determine a valid or invalid human. When doing the DNA tests in Gattaca we can see that vincent had a hard time fitting in, because no matter how freedom he has, it all comes down to one DNA tests to determine if he is a valid or not. Referring back to Brave New World , we can see that soma is used to calm people down and used to express people's feelings , rather in Gattaca DNA testing is used to calm people down by showing the identity of one person, knowing if they are validated to stay and work at certain locations. DNA testing can also be used in different other causes too . For example, when Vincent was little he was looked as an invalid because he was born naturally. Yet when his brother was born they went to a specialist and got the requirements to be a genetic baby. Similarly, in Brave New World bottles were used to identify what caste you will be put into when you are going to be born. Likewise in Gattaca we see that being born naturally you don't get much choice by to do unnatural jobs that don't need to require you dream about your dream job in the future. Yet being born genetically it allows you to dream of what you aspires and what you would like to become in the future. Referring back to electric fence from Brave New World, we can see that in Gattaca , there is an invisible electric fence in place. No one

Soma is used by the citizens to escape reality when life gets overwhelming and it is described as a vacation reality in the book. The soma is a form of social control because it keeps the citizens from thinking anything is wrong because the moment they do they are conditioned to take soma to solve the problem. Lenina uses the soma and she desperately wants the soma when she visits the Savage Reservation with Bernard because the shock of the Savage’s lifestyle is too much for her (Huxley 94). The Savage’s mother Linda comes back to civilization and she then eventually dies from taking too much soma to escape the reality of her life and to feel good because she believes the only soma can offer that (130). Lastly this drug keeps the people from being free according to the Savage and this social control because the people are so unaware that their being controlled that the children try to kill the Savage when he is throwing the soma out the window instead of thinking about what the Savage is saying or that the bliss they have is a lie…

“Simple peck-order bullying is only the beginning of the kind of hierarchical behavior that can lead to racism, sexism, ethnocentrism, classism, and all the other 'isms' that cause so much suffering in the world.” Octavia E. Butler. Everyone needs their “place” in society: leader, hunter, builder, or even follower and securing a place in society can often lead to conflict. The need for hierarchy is evident all throughout Lord of the Flies, a novel by William Golding about a group of British boys stranded alone on an island. The boys are able to form “social classes” by the end of chapter one by establishing dominance over one another, even if they had to do it through simple peck-order bullying.…

I had the opportunity to watch the movie, Gattaca, during one of my medical ethics class this semester. We had to determine if future genetic engineering is ethical or not. However, at first it seems ethical with a society genetically perfect, but to be marked as an “invalid” or insufficient enough, from birth restricts a person to a career not requiring an education, such as a cleaner. Creation of a new form of prejudice produces the idea of having greater or second-rate genes.…

    • Social classes in the United States play a major role in how society functions and how people “…live, work, and think”. • Social classes aren’t determined simply by looking at one’s wealth, income, or lifestyle. Class is greatly influenced by power/authority. The author explains how class is rooted in the power relations found in the workplace. Class is determined by the role people play, in relation to what others do, in the production process which the author refers to as “production power”.…

Society: May Cause Side Effects Imagine a reality where one had no control over his own choices- whether its marriage, friends, or even taste in music. In the novel Age of Innocence, one would expect to live such a lifestyle. Taking place in upper class New York, the socialites “all lived in a kind of hieroglyphic world, where the real thing was never said or done or even thought, but only represented by a set of arbitrary signs” (Wharton 145). Wharton’s novel tells the story of personal freedom, and how it is stifled by the rigid social conventions of the time (McWilliams 268).…

Society’s views on the inferior is crucial in shaping them as individuals with differences down to science, however their personality highlights who they are. Gattaca explores the pre-existent reputation of “invalids”, suggesting no matter what you are, society has the presumption that you are not worthy enough of a superior life. The separation casted between “valids” and “invalids”, suggests society values one’s place and purpose over an individual’s personality and qualities. Gattaca’s tagline “there’s no gene for the human spirit” contradicts the film itself, as a person's self-worth cannot be measured by their genes. However, throughout the film, the dystopian society is isolated into two groups depending on what you are.…

I chose the Class Consciousness issue because I find it interesting to make observations and assumptions of an individual based on clothing, age, race and etc. When doing this observational research I observed 3 different people. I first began observing a male. After sometime observing I made a guess that he was a part of the “Working Class” which we see as “the social class consisting of mostly blue collar or service industry workers who are less likely to have a college degree; they constitute about 30% of the us population. ”(2016;186)…

The base represents the high amount of people in the lower class, while the peak represents the low amount of people in the highest class.
