Musicals are usually romantic which subjects to lovers focus. From Parkinson (2007) mentioned that musicals derives from oppositional aspects and contrasting behaviour of the male and female characters instead of focusing on the causal-chronological progress of the film. (p. 249) The Phantom of the Opera (2004) matches what Parkinson has mentioned which is a musical romance film which focused on oppositional characteristics and contrasting behaviour of how the main characters face their love. However, it contains a bit horror as the extreme characters and setting involved. This paper will discuss how the director, Andrew Lloyd Webber uses characters and setting, music and mis-en-scene to attract the audiences to get involve into the opera atmosphere …show more content…
From the chosen scene, the music in a quick bit and strong voice and tight bit which signified the tight thing will happen. Phantom suddenly substituted another actor to sing The Point of no Return, Christine knew Phantom came, Phantom sing more investment. From MetroLyrics (2015), “Past the point of no return, no backward glances” which states that Phantom and Christine cannot go back to teacher-student relationship, and no way for them to go back. When the end of the duet, Phantom sang “Anywhere you go let me go too! Christine, that's all I ask of”, then Christine took off Phantom’s face mask which led Phantom’s ugly face to expose in front of the audiences. This duet implied a romantic climactic point and was reserved for the final scene (Parkinson, 2007, p.252). This lyrics with the scene can show how Phantom obsessed over Christine and how Christine try to bring Phantom to the reality. After that, Phantom caught Christine to the underground shelter, the song Down Once more/ Track this murderer began by Phantom. From MetroLyrics (2015), the lyrics mentioned “Down once more to the dungeons of my black despair! Down we plunge to the prison of my mind. Down that path into darkness deep as hell!” which shows how Phantom was in a darkness side likes a prison to trap him deep as hell. With the fire setting, it signified their love as growing fire which may suddenly burn in an uncontrollable way. The colour is generally in red and black tone for the part on the theatre (Figure.9) which indicates the atmosphere is in a nervous and tight mood which also signified something will break out soon. The colour is in grey tone for the part in the Phantom’s basement (Figure.10) which signified as cruel and lonely atmosphere. A middle shot contained when Christine looked around and sang The Point of no Return which means she is waiting for something or somebody. When the male soprano wear the mask came out, it was the crucial character for Phantom which signified the actor was substituted by Phantom (Figure.9). The medium shot keeps use for Phantom and Christine as they are the dominant of the shot (Figure.11). The colour is in red and black behind Christine and Phantom which signified the scene is in a tight and dynamic atmosphere. Montage is used shot used in many ways to emphasize show the tense emotion and identity rebuild. By using dancers in between the shot of Phantom and Christine (Figure.12) to indicate their heart are similar to dancers which contain tense emotion and both of them are changing their emotion towards each other.
