Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767 in a log cabin on frontier Tennessee. He the first frontier president and served in office from 1829 to 1837. Due to the fact that Jackson wasn't born into a family with money and great social status, he was very "for the people." He was the forefather of the modern Democratic Party and believed that no man was better than another, no matter his wealth, position or even his education. He fought for the working class people and tried to show Americans that the the government works for the people. During his presidency, Andrew Jackson had many accomplishments.

In 1828, a high protective tariff was passed by Congress. This new tariff infuriated the southern states due to the fact that they felt it only benefited the north. Vice President John C. Calhoun from South Carolina stated that the federal government only existed at the will of the states. Hence, if a state found a federal law unconstitutional and damaging to its sovereign interests, it would have the right to "nullify" that law within its borders. Although, in 1832, Henry Clay had pushed through Congress a new tariff bill, with lower rates than the tariff of 1828, it was still too high for the southerners. The South Carolina Ordinance of Nullification was enacted into law on November 24, 1832; as far as South Carolina was concerned, there was no tariff. President Andrew Jackson threatened to send troops to South Carolina to enforce the laws. Ultimately, Congress revised the tariff, reducing the amount of the tariff, but South Carolina was forced to accept that there were limits on an individual state's
