He then started his own private practice, which thrived. He then married Rachel Robards, who was the daughter of a local colonel. In 1796, Jackson was elected the first representative from Tennessee, and was elected into the U.S. Senate shortly after. He resigned eight months after, but was then assigned a circuit judge on Tennessee’s court. He then received a plantation, the Hermitage, and had a large mansion built on it. Four years into being a judge, he was appointed a major general in the Tennessee militia. In the War of 1812, he led an attack on the Creek Indians, who were allies with the British. The Indians also massacred hundreds of Fort Mims settlers. It took five months. Later, at Horseshoe Bend in 1814, Jackson defeated the Creek Indians, killing about 800 warriors. This was a major victory for the U.S., as it gained twenty million acres of land, so the U.S promoted him to a U.S. military general. He later led an attack against the Spanish territory in Florida, and he captured the Pensacola outpost. He continued to lead his soldiers on to the British in New Orleans, and he gained a victory, despite his odds of being outnumbered two-to-one. He then was named a national hero, and was given a gold medal for his victory. Later, Jackson was called back into service for the First Seminole War, which he invaded Florida, and captured Pensacola once again, but this time he also captured St. Mark’s as well. He also overthrew the governor, José Masot, and had two men executed. That brought up protests from the Spanish government, and which created a large discussion in Washington. MAny wanted Jackson’s censure, but John Quincy Adams, who was the Secretary of the State at the time, defended Jackson and his actions. After his military experience, he decided to become a politician. He was a major hit, and soon gained a seat
