Scott was not very happy that Carnegie did that without permission, but he was very impressed with what Carnegie did. Moreover, Scott decided to give Carnegie more responsibility and decision making power. When Scott was drafted to serve under the Assistant Secretary of War in the Civil War, Carnegie was more than ready to take the place as superintendent. Carnegie stayed at Pennsylvania Railroad until 1865. While Carnegie was investing his money and working for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Carnegie wrote a letter to himself about his uneasiness with the business life. One writing, explaining, “To continue much longer overwhelmed by business cares and with most of my thoughts wholly upon the way to make more money in the shortest time must degrade me beyond hope of permanent recovery I will resign business at thirty-five, but during the ensuring two years I wish to spend the afternoons in receiving instruction and in reading systematically.”(qtd. in “Andrew Carnegie” pbs.org) Only two years after writing his letter, he introduced a new steel process. Therefore, Carnegie was earning a great deal of money by investing his money
