Andrew Carnegie: Captain Of Industry

Improved Essays
My entrepreneur, Andrew Carnegie, was a Captain of Industry. His philanthropy, and compassion to others shows his Captain of Industry side. However he committed some Robber Baron-like acts.

Notably, Mr. Carnegie assured all his workers jobs, according to Resource 2. This is a Captain of Industry- like act because it shows that he wanted to make sure his workers can support their families. In addition to what was previously stated, Mr. Carnegie erected over 2,500 public libraries according to Resource 1. This presents that he wanted to educate the future generations. This also indicates that he wanted to make sure the future of the world is set up for success. In addition to that, Mr. Carnegie built Carnegie Hall, and the Carnegie Institute

According to the fourth article, “Protective gear” consisted of only two layers of wool longjohns; horrible injuries were common.” Meaning Mr. Carnegie had not protected his workers from dangers such as steel spills or gas leaks. In accordance to this Andrew Carnegie cut wages, and work days were too long and busy for workers to eat, according to the video. Although the workers were not treated fairly, and this is a Robber Baron act, I believe everything else Mr. Carnegie did makes up for it. Also, they did not have the technology to prevent steel spills or gas leaks like we do today. There were no fire prevention suits, or gas masks to prevent injuries back in Mr. Carnegie's day. On the other hand if I were Mr. Carnegie I would have tried harder to protect my workers, because they are what make my profit. In a way the workers are the heart of the factory.

Given these points, I believe Andrew Carnegie was a Captain of Industry. He built schools, libraries, and even assured jobs to his workers. Even though he was human and showed his Robber Baroness he was not a bad man, and was truly a Captain of Industry. Andrew Carnegie believed “A man who dies rich dies disgraced,” which is something to remember when thinking about the actions he took in his life.
In all I would rate Mr. Carnegie a 2 because he was helped out the future with schools and libraries, as well as assuring his workers pay. However he was not perfect and could not be given a one, because he had indeed treated his workers poorly. Thus, a 2 is the right

It all depends on if one is viewing the way he became wealthy or if they’re viewing what he did with that wealth as his defining moment. Looking back on all he did, it is apparent that he always had great reasoning behind his actions. In Carnegie’s essay that was published in the North American Review, Wealth, he generalized the ideas behind Charles Darwin’s theories of human society where the free-market economics and governmental noninterference provided a solid platform to where the survival of the fittest could play out and be observed. This man was truly invested in doing whatever it took to be successful, which is his case meant that he had to push his workers to longer hours and low wages. And some might see that a bit…

Carnegie paid his workers only about $1.81 when they worked for about 10.67 hours, which was one of the highest paying job in manufacturing. Whereas, Carnegie statistically made $9,200 ($92,000 as of today) every hour (Doc I). Also, during the Homestead Strike, Carnegie knew something bad was going to happen but ran off and left his Vice President Henry Clay Frick who used methods that were horrible to get what he wanted (Film). The relationship with his workers is a good reason why Andrew Carnegie wasn’t a hero because even though the pay for the workers were alright, they were working in horrible conditions; it was all hot, loud and gas was given off. He earned a lot of money and didn’t raise their wages for all their hard work but decided to slowly lower it for his own profits. When the laborers went on a strike to get a union, they blocked the company, not allowing anyone to go back in to continue working.…

Andrew Carnegie believed that it was the duty of the wealthy to help the poor. His idea of help came in the form of opportunities “to help those who will help themselves.” The wealthy would provide opportunities, not direct aid, to the poor; these opportunities could take the forms of “free libraries, parks, and means of recreation by which men are helped in body and mind; works of art, certain to give pleasure and improve the general condition of the people.” However, these opportunities did not really help the poor.…

A hero is someone who helps people who is in need of help and someone who gives to the poor and doesn’t spend money on unnecessary things that aren’t important. A hero is also somebody who has good leadership. Carnegie had a steelmaking company, In Carnegie’s time in the northeast of about the 1900s. It seems to me that someone must do the dirty work and the difficult jobs that the benefactors are certainly not taking part in, yet Carnegie tells men to aim for the highest. In some ways it seems as if he is trying to hold society as a whole to a higher level by telling the men of the lowest tear to work towards their goals and achieve greatness. I found Carnegie to be a combination of persuasive and self-serving. In many instances his writing seemed to speak to a certain audience one that has the money to make change and the possibility transform society as a whole. However at the same time in was self-serving in that his speech really is not directed towards everyone.…

The philanthropy of Andrew Carnegie did not make him a hero because he did not demonstrate integrity and concern for others, traits that every hero should have. The paper Carnegie is holding out to his workers on Document D says “NOTICE: Wages reduced 20%.” In the cartoon there is also a caption that reads: “FORTY-MILLIONAIRE CARNEGIE AND HIS GREAT DOUBLE ROLE. As the tightfisted exploiter he reduces wages that he may play philanthropist and give away libraries etc.” What the author means by this is that he is cutting the wages of the workers so he can boost his reputation.…
