In order to write an effective novel or piece of writing, an author must first live their own lives and use it in their writing to improve the quality and relatibility of their text. TOPIC SENTENCE Without any experience, an author does not have anything to write about. Only when experiencing what their own lives have to offer them can they have any insight on what they can write about. When all an author does is write and write, they are not only losing their sanity, but they have nothing tangible and real to write about(Gish Jen 105). Writing about what you know is a common phrase in the literary world, so it’s obvious that for a writer to cover a sophisticated range of topics and be accurate about them, they have to have an understanding …show more content…
The problem for many authors is that “they need to write in order to face the world”(Alice Hoffman 97). They can work through their own issues with their characters and writing, which can help them understand what’s really going on in their lives and how others see what they’re going through rather than a one-sided view. Authors write about their own lives so they “may borrow their[other people’s] gaze and begin to see our life through their eyes, not ours”(Andre Aciman 6). This helps their creative process because they do not remember the events as biased, and remove themselves from the situation to better understand what really happened. They use this technique and apply it to their writing, allowing the reader and themselves to see a more objective view of a situation. On the other hand, in fiction or nonfiction, an author can and will allow themselves to be dedicated and biased in the text in order to further get a point across. Perhaps the most important aspect of applying their own experiences to their writing is that their writing is relatable and readers can connect to it. Working through their own issues provides an outlet for the reader to connect with the author, as so many
