Who is Andra Day? Well, Andra Day became popular in late 2012 due to her releasing covers on Youtube (Musictory). She is also a thirty-two-year-old contemporary singer and songwriter. Her music background is R&B and Retro-Soul. In her song; “Rise Up”, Andra uses metaphors, imagery, similes, and a little bit of first person perspective as if she is right there with someone obtaining obstacles. Andra also uses a tone of motivation during the song to get someone through the rough times. In the first stanza of the lyrics; she says, “You’re broken down and tired of living life on a merry-go-round…” (AZLyrics). Day gives a sense of imagery that describes someone who is tired and feels like giving up. She also throws in a metaphor to describe how …show more content…
This is the main message of the song. It may have described the album, but truly that is the description of the song. People cannot walk in a state of fear. Everyone is not perfect; we all make mistakes. If fear takes over, then there is no coming back. Nothing will get accomplished if you are afraid to do it. As Day’s words flow through her lyrics. In the second stanza Day talks about overcoming fears by facing them. “And I’ll rise up, I’ll rise like the day...I’ll rise up and I’ll do it a thousand times again” (AZLyrics). Basically this means that you will get up every day despite the challenges that are in a person’s face. Even though it is hard, anyone can do it with the strength and self-determination that God gave them. Day also shares some words that have touched me personally. “In spite of the ache, I’ll rise up…” (AZLyrics). When your heart feels broken and you feel as if the world is on your shoulders. You struggle with giving up on everything or to get through it. No one likes to experience pain, even if it is physical, mental, or emotional pain. It does not matter which one, bottom line it hurts and no one should ever have to go through it. Especially if they are going through it …show more content…
You can see the morning routine of the couple. It starts with her reading a message from her husband’s message board. The message said, “I want to take you out on a date today.” Soon you see the message board attached to a wheelchair. Later, it shows the woman bathing her husband while Andra is singing in the background. The woman picks out a nice dress and gets ready while the husband waits. Fast forward to the scene at the restaurant, there you see the woman getting out of the van and makes eye-contact with a very attractive young man. She then realizes the reality that is right in front of her. The woman smiled at the man, but as she got closer to the other side of the van to get her husband, her smile soon faded. There it hits where it hurts because she feels a little guilty for looking at another man who is handsome and healthy. Whereas her husband is not. On the date, it shows where she has to hold the menu for her husband and feed him when their food arrives. Towards the end, you see the couple laughing and having a good time. As if it is just them two without a care in the world. Overall, the video shows how the love is strong enough to where the woman is not bothered by taking care of her husband. At times she felt a sense of regret, but she overcame in the end and still continues to love and care for him. As Andra sings the lyrics in

I highly enjoyed Kyra Selman cabaret show at Rockwell. She did an amazing job telling a story in a musical genre. Songs that really stood out are I am what I am, Drunken Love, and Black Girl Medley. The reason those songs stood out because most likely they are songs I have heard already, while majority of the other songs in Kyra cabaret I did not recognize and can not give a name. I enjoyed the whole show but the areas where I know the songs help me remember the story.…

The trombones open up with vigor and power, the piano and bass discreetly accompanies them while the beat of the drums, conga and Guiro in the background makes everything flow to give rhythm and soul to this piece of Latin music I know as Salsa. As the intro makes its conclusion the trombones and drums act simultaneously as a heartbeat skipping a beat, giving the effect of a slight pause right before Hector Laveo “El Cantante” sings his first words. Hector with his high, pure and distinguished voice says “Todo Tiene Su final” which translates to “Everything has its End”. I pause the song, “everything has its end” stays in my mind as the beat of percussion echoes in my head. In what context does he say this?…
