Anders Breivik: Current Event

In 2011 Anders Breivik, a far-right terrorist and self proclaimed fascist, killed 77 people. First by setting off a bomb he killed eight people in Regjeringskvartalet, the government quarter of Oslo, secondly he shot dead 69 participants of a Workers' Youth League (AUF) summer camp on the island of Utøya. The crown equivalent in Norway sentenced Anders to 21 years in prison in preventative detention. In Norway this is the maximum punishment available for civilians and was, in my opinion, the only and best option currently available to the system.. A detailed account

Anders also wrote that the main reason for his violent actions was for an opportunity to call attention to his manifesto. Before Anders’s case he was evaluated to be sane and therefore fully accountable for his actions. He was charged with 21 years in prison with the possibility of his sentence stretching on

There are various disagreements on the force of the death penalty such as morality, constitutionality, deterrence, retribution, irrevocable mistakes. In the case of mentally ill offender, I feel as if that the society and the state has the responsibility of looking beyond death as a means to exact retribution, retribution in itself may not be enough as a way of justifying committed mistakes of these people or the desire to make the criminal pay for his crime. This nice way expressing society’s anger is not enough to get…

In October 2001, just one month after the tragic September 11 attacks on the twin towers, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien pledged to support the United States. It was announced that Canada would join a UN-approved NATO coalition attack in Afghanistan (in order to support the United States). The purpose of this was to find and neutralize al-Qaeda which was a global militant Islamist organization. In addition, the main goal was to track and hunt down Osama Bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda, since the Taliban government refused to reveal Bin Laden’s hiding place. The province that Canada was responsible for was Kandahar, which was presumably the most dangerous province in Afghanistan.…

After the 9/11 attacks, Osama Bin Laden, to most ghouls, looked rather…edible. If I were a ghoul, my ghoul name would be that of the most famous terrorist, Osama Bin Laden. Bin Laden was the organizer of the faction that crashed three planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and slaughtering 2,000 innocent people. He established Al-Qaeda, a terrorist organization. On September 11, 2001, affiliates of Al-Qaeda took action.…

In 2003, Andre Thomas viciously attacked and killed his ex-wife and her two children, and was sentenced to death row. His defense argued that he was not eligible for death row because of his mental state. The court ignored the argument and passed it off, saying that they were using his illness as an excuse to “get out of” maximum punishment. As demonstrated in this case, mental illness is not given the attention it deserves when determining a sentence. Cases such as these have aroused concern how fair the criminal court is towards the mentally ill.…

The Qur’an, an Islamic holy text, often states that it is a religion of peace and charity, and, until recently, violence in the name of the faith was quite isolated. As an anonymous member of Reddit’s r/Islam community states, “though Islam is a peaceful religion, not all Muslims support peace.” One of those few was Osama bin Laden, commonly known as America’s prime adversary. He and his organization, Al Qaeda, took responsibility for atrocities committed against the American people, atrocities like the September 11th attacks, one of the nation’s darkest days. However, in the 1970’s and 80’s, the United States itself funded bin Laden and his colleagues.…

Sterbenz writes about how a different approach to the prison system could be the way to go, at least statistically speaking. She talks about Norway’s “rehabilitation first” approach. Norway believe that the point of prison is not strictly just punishment, but also to create better citizens that can come out of their prisons and actually contribute to Norway’s society. The author also shows some numbers that prove that Norway is doing something right. Quotes from people that are against such a left wing approach are also presented.…
