In the book the first chapter tells about how every character views themselves, their financial/work status, and why they are going to Soldier Island. Also it plays a gramophone about everyone's past, this is when you find out that everyone committed a murder. Throughout the book the author tells a little bit more about everyone. In doing this she makes you question who the murder really is. Similarly in “Haircut,” the whole story leading up to the murder is about the characters and their past. You find out that Jim always plays tricks on the other townspeople, especially Paul and Julie. Paul had always liked Julie and felt it his job to defend her, this caused him to shoot Jim when they went duck
