Both And Then There Were None , by Agatha Christie ,and “The Gold Bug,” by Edgar Allen Poe, feature plots based on mysteries as well as a gothic element. This Gothic writing style can be used to scare an audience, making for a very intriguing story. “The Gold Bug” differs from And Then There Were None in some aspects, including the lack of death in the short story. Although the stories were written by different authors , and at different times, they both feature gothic settings along with mysterious plots. And Then There Were None is nearly based all on mystery and trying to figure out why and how so many people are being killed. Likewise, “The Gold Bug” has a plot based on a mystery, although the short story has a mystery based on finding treasure, not a murderer.

Both stories have aspects of supernatural elements. The supernatural elements in And Then there Were None influence many of the characters and drastically help move the story along. Similarly “The Gold Bug,” has hints of supernatural and abnormal events. In “The Gold Bug” there are multiple instances in which supernatural, or unexplained, events are very important in the plot. For example, in And Then There Were None , some characters accused the deaths on the supernatural. We also see

This can be best shown when Poe starts to blur the lines between the supernatural and the psychological, as seen in many of his tales of murder and suspense. One analyzer of Poe’s work, named Marilyn Robinson wrote, “For a writer so intrigued by the operations of the mind as Poe was, an interest in conscience leads to an interest in concealment and self-deception, things that are secretive and highly individual and at the same time so universal that they shape civilizations,” (Robinson). It is clearly evident that Poe’s interest and fascination with the psychological was not only from his mind, but mostly from the tragedies that happened in his life. These tragedies greatly affect, not only the psychological aspects of his stories, but also the theme and plot of the story. One of the best known examples of Poe’s psychological works is The Black Cat, where he explores the psychological aspects of guilt.…
