And Then There Were None Literary Analysis

Many Gothic literature novels or short stories show techniques of suspicion and supernatural elements. The novel And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie and the short story ¨Ghostly Rental¨ by Henry James both show characteristics of being Gothic literature. They share many similar ideas and topics, but also many different ones. In these stories, the elements help to describe the atmosphere of the main idea of each story. In the novel And Then There Were None, ten people including himself are invited to an island, but have no idea why. Eventually they all start to die, but nobody knows why this is happening. Eventually they all die, and the murderer commits suicide. In ¨Ghostly Rental¨ there is a mysterious house down a long abandoned road in the woods when a man finds it and is suddenly interested in the house that he now calls ¨haunted¨, but doesn't know who lives/lived in the house. In Christie's novel, many people are randomly invited to a remote island, but can't seem to figure out why. This causes the characters to wonder and start to investigate more once people start dying one by one. In James´ short story, the man walking down the old abandoned path finds the remote, old house in the middle of the woods. A sudden wariness comes over him, and he is suddenly interested in the house and wants to know more about it. It creates irony between the characters and the setting.
