And Then There Were None Gothic

In Gothic literature suspicion and supernatural feelings play a big role. The novel And Then There Were None, by Agatha Christie, she makes us get into the book by using suspicion. Christie makes us believe anyone could of been committing the murders by giving us their background to show they have all could be suspects. In contrast the poem “All Souls,” by Edith Wharton it only talks about the dead coming back to life. All Souls compared to And Then There Were None, they both have a gothic setting, the novel And Then There None is held on a remote island in an old house, in addition “All Souls,” is held at a church graveyard with supernatural phenomenons, just as Christie shows supernatural thoughts in some characters throughout the book also. In Christie’s novel there is a long trail of unsolved murders. Christie is trying to create suspicion and suspense for you to finally find out who the murder is. You don’t suspect many of the guest to be committing the murders in the house but it turns out to be the person who has been taking control over solving the the murders. This goes to show how gothic literature can be twisted in some ways. Now in the poem by Wharton, she has a totally different setting and way of creating supernatural feelings. In And Then There Were None, the hint of supernatural feelings came from when Vera though of a supernatural being could be committing the murders, but of course she ends up being wrong. However in “All Souls,” the supernatural go throughout the entire poem. Wharton talks about the dead in a churchyard being able to see and hear, they could get attached to someone or something and have a night for them self. There isn’t much supernatural in And Then There Were None, but the small hint of it makes it give you an idea on how the poem and book
