The short story by Edgar Allen Poe the Oval Portrait would be an example of gothic literature. The short story is about a man needing a place to stay so he spends the night at an apartment to rest. The man would stay in awe a while he was observing the many paintings that surrounded the apartment. He finally laid to rest and notice one painting in particular but as soon as he laid eyes on the painting he had passed out in some sort of trance. While tranced he was looking at the picture and observing every detail and admiring how life like the painting had been.…

William Faulkner was one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. He wrote many great stories that were focused mainly in the southern United States, using similar characters and the setting of Yoknapatawpha County. In 1950, Faulkner received a Nobel Peace Prize for literature and in his acceptance speech for the award he stated that for a story to last forever it must include six eternal verities, which are love, honor, pity, pride, compassion, and sacrifice. (Faulkner 3). Sometimes these values are obvious, but others are hidden away in the writing.…

If there was ever a school that matched my personality, it would be Washington and Lee. Its small, traditional campus prefers a warm, but not a "sweat your socks off" climate, just as I do. It is a school that was instituted on the backs of Southern history and remains as a breeding ground for the traditional past. In reading Southern literature this fall, including the works of William Faulkner and Eudora Welty, the themes of the South became increasingly relevant and applicable to me.…

Gothic literature can be classified by various characteristics. These characteristics can show up alone in some works, but when they appear simultaneously, the work can be determined as gothic. “Jane Eyre” (I would just italicize instead of “ but you do you) fully exhibits these common gothic elements; however, another work that incorporates many of these elements is “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Although at first glance, it appears to simply be a fairytale, upon deeper inspection, there are certain elements tied into the plotline that, I believe, classify it as a gothic tale. “Jane Eyre” is a classic example of gothic literature.…

Misunderstood Heroes The word of a hero has lost its meaning; due to the fact that the heroes aren’t making any change to the community. These heroes are the ones who follow the rules, the ones who obey law and order civil society to be accustomed to the system without noticing the flaws disappointing the ideals of this democracy. Those are not the heroes we should look up to. The ones who take a stand for what they believe in are the real heroes because they risk their lives to speak what's right, yet they are the ones to be executed, banished and imprisoned.…

The color which we thought related to the overall mood of the poem was a purple or violet, as it represent sunset, a time when everything turns dark, but still has a small glimmer of light or hope, mirrored by how the poem seemed to follow a generally dark vibe with a few slightly positive lines. As for our image, it was a ghost walking through a small path cut through snowed over grass, with a fog blurring the background at night. In addition, there was a full moon glaring through the fog in the background, along with a frozen pond at the side. Lastly, our symbol was of a dim lightbulb on a black background.…

Time Rots William Faulkner and John Keats were born a century and thousands of miles apart, in worlds that were foundationally different. These differences helped shape their works and perspective, with Romanticism influencing Keats and Modernism influencing Faulkner. Though the two movements share an “oppos[ition] to reason and logic,” the medium they focused on differed widely (Tucker). Romanticists tended to find inspiration in the natural world while Modernists analyzed the way technology affected society, “often to its detriment” (Tucker).…

Edgar Allan Poe does not qualify as a gothic fiction author because in his short stories, the character and conflict do not fit the criteria to make it a gothic story. To start, in some of Poe’s stories, the evil is not always destroyed, but instead takes over the protagonist. Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, “The Masque of the Red Death” states that Prince Prospero was killed by the Red Death and then it killed everyone else, and the Red Death “held illimitable dominion over all” (4). In a gothic story, the conflict gets resolved by the evil getting destroyed and the protagonist finds moral success.…

Barn Burning is a good story to read, but confusing at some times as it goes along. The story begins with the father being accused of burning a man's barn down probably because he was just mad at the man. The father is always the reason for the family moving so much which shows a pitiful excuse of a man if you ask me. As the family moves to another town, the father has an opportunity at another job for Major de Spain. This job does not last long because the father intentionally stepped in poop and ruined the rug in Mr. Spain's house.…

11/20/ 15 Gothic elements in literature Society in this day and age has skyrocketed into more conflicts. Whether it 's violence in crime or the psychological issue -- maybe even both -- these elements are a clear reflection of the many novels (with components of gothic literature) that truly reveal how our society has progressed to today. The novel, Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn, illustrates the various parts and conflicts today somewhat. Other works do the same; for example, short stories like The Feather Pillow by Horacio Quiroga, The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe, and The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe utilize similar ideas.…
