And Summer Is Gone Amy Quotes

Our society often glorifies toxic, and abusive behaviours when it comes to romantic relationships. Specifically within media, male characters are often put on pedestals for doing things that are actually quite harmful. In Susie Kretschmer's, And Summer Is Gone her main character David extremely awful towards his childhood friend Amy. His unhealthy actions towards her, are never seen as such though, instead David’s actions are romanticized by both the author and the reader. Despite his clearly poor treatment of her, Amy is the one demonized, simplily for living her life the way she wishes and differently than David would. Throughout the whole story David is judgemental, and extremely close minded towards things that he deems as ‘good’; his toxicity only strengthening has they grow older. …show more content…
Throughout the whole passage he makes snide remarks about Amy, and later on about her friend group as well. David is truly implying that Amy should feel bad for moving on in her social life, friends, and interests. David seems to think that he is better than Amy because he keeps to himself, or because his interests are slightly less mundane than Amys. Amy’s lexical choices reiterate the notion that she finds Laurie’s actions appalling. By repeatedly using the intensifier “really,” for instance, she highlights the true extent of her disapproval. She does not care to mimic his attempts at dispelling the tension with humor, either, opting to instead strike him with the truth by pointing out, among other things, that it is not wickedness with which he is afflicted, but something more dangerous: sheer “indolence.” “Dreadful,” “foolish,” “selfish”: these are but a few of the many adjectives she uses when describing him. Each, with its negative connotations, is incredibly incriminatory, reinforcing the idea that she genuinely finds his behavior repugnant.…

Changing of the Times The Canterbury Tales were first written in 1392, and published in 1475, was the beginning of many controversial issues that would appear over the next seven centuries. Author and Middle Englishmen Geoffrey Chaucer was a noble man and controller of the customs and the justice of peace in 1386. So much has changed from the then to now that we even use a different calendar system then what they would use! More of a representation of what the times were like and how they’ve changed was marriage and the changing of the church, something shown in the Canterbury tales: The Pardoners Tale, the Millers Tale, and the Wife of Bath’s Tale. Characters and their choices are different from what is traditionally and modernly expected…

This is a review of a movie, Pretty Woman, from 1990 with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Most girls of my generation have seen this movie over and over again, because it is soooo romantic! It’s a contemporary Cinderella-story about a wealthy businessman and a prostitute who fall in love. However, when I look at this beautiful love story with more critical eyes, I can see that it is full of prejudice ideas and values.…

Liking is for cowards, go for what Hurts - Jonathan Franzen’s work ‘Liking is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts’ is structured around the idea that humans live in a world where increasingly the most important relationships in our lives, are the superficial and short lived ones we have with our tech devices. I agree with Jonathan’s point that that amongst a world of techno-consumerism we hide our real selves, and that we portray the version of ourselves that we think is going to be the most likeable. Although I do not agree with the romantic lens in which he writes about this contemporary issue through, framing his argument around the issue of love, and the love we have for our narcissistic selves. The reason that people ‘dedicate their existence…

There is an apparent notion across America that double standards and sexism are concepts that were left behind years ago. However, as I’ve analyzed different forms of media over the past few years, it has become glaringly obvious that this is not true. Despite what we’d like to convince ourselves, sexism and gender discrimination still dominate society. Whether through music videos, writing, or art, women are always judged more critically for their expression than men are. Often times, men make the same mistakes as women, yet the criticism is significantly more severe towards females.…
