Harper Lee wrote this description of Mrs. Dubose’s bedroom in the Pulitzer Prize winner, To Kill a Mockingbird. When compared to the Academy Award winning film, To Kill a Mockingbird has many similarities differences, and omissions. The narrator of the novel, Scout Finch, takes the reader on an adventure through her childhood. Scout’s aunt, Aunt Alexandra, comes to her house to make Scout more ladylike; being asked to be an attorney for a criminal case, Atticus Finch defends Tom Robinson when he is accused for raping Mayella Ewell. Rain-rotted shingles drooped over the eaves of the veranda; oak trees kept the sun away. The remains of a picket drunkenly guarded the front yard-a ‘swept’ yard that was never swept-where Johnson grass and rabbit-tobacco grew in abundance” (Lee 10). The children go to the Radley house to see it up close. When they enter Boo’s property the children easily get scared when they hear a noise and run away. Getting stuck in the fence, Jem’s pants rip so he decides to leave them there and continues to run toward his house. One of the main characters in the novel is Aunt Alexandra, and she is not shown in the movie. The purpose of Aunt Alexandra in the novel is to teach Scout how to act and dress like a lady. Also, she also came to restore order in Atticus’s home. Another omission from the movie is how Calpurnia takes the kids to her church on Sunday. Jem and Scout see what Calpurnia’s church is like. In Calpurnia’s church, there is only one hymnbook since most of them cannot read or write. Also, they spoke using slang in the church. To add, the main importance of Miss Maudie is lost in the movie. Miss Maudie’s house is burned down in the novel, and Boo Radley gives Scout a blanket. In addition, Scout and Dill get little cakes, and Jem gets a piece of the big cake to show that he is mature and can get treated like an adult. Many scenes were omitted because it would have made the movie too
