1. Why does Rolf get so invested into helping Azucena?
Rolf overtime get’s an emotional connection towards Azucena as her situation reminds him of his past and his difficulties he’s been through. In a way, he feels an embodiment with Azucena. This connection leads him to disregard the reason why Rolf went to the site in the first place. During his time with Azucena, he only focuses on her due to the heavy connection he feels.
2. How has Rolf changed by the end of the short story?
Rolf at the end of the story seems destroyed from the inside after the death of Azucena. From the narrator’s perspective, Rolf continues to ponder about his time with Azucena and what he could’ve done. He keeps thinking about Azucena and

What does the title of the short story really mean?
The title really is symbolism for the entire short story. The clay symbolizes a stagnant substance or in this case a stagnant situation. Rolf with Azucena being trapped by clay is remade as he confronts the memories of his past and get’s over them. The death of Azucena causes Rolf to change again, but to only be trapped by the stagnant guilt of her death. It’s overall a very woeful meaning that the title has hidden within it.
6. What does the author want the reader to take from And of Clay Are We Created ?
To me, Isabel Allende intended to send the message of accepting the past and moving on from it. Rolf through the short story has difficulties with coming to terms with his past. With the time Rolf has with Azucena, he resolves those lingering problems he has within himself. The death of Azucena doesn’t help though as it makes him into the same person he was before, held back by his past. In a way, Allende wants readers to be and not to be Rolf. It’s good that we take the compassionate and caring side of Rolf’s character but not the depressed and lingering side of

Mary Caroline Richards’ “Centering” eloquently deals with the contemplative questioning of all of life’s complex opposites. This piece poetically offers the centering of clay on a potter 's wheel as a metaphor for bringing the contradictions of our psyche into conjunction with one another. My essay will dissect and analyze Richards’ writing and use of diction to demonstrate how she treats “centering” as a never-ending journey rather than a destination to be reached. The title, “Centering”, is one word foreshadowing the theme of becoming “one with oneself.”…

In the first chapter, “Welcome,” Wilson establishes his ongoing metaphor of earth and life being like a tilt-a-whirl, ferris wheel, or fair (in essence, wildly spinning and not within our control). In the second, “Tickets, Please,” he examines a few major categories of philosophical and scientific opinions regarding existence then proceeds to make fun of them, while also detailing the vast amount of detail in the world that would, according to him, require an all-powerful and all-wonderful deity to create. In the third, “Breathing Characters,” the author compares life to a story or a stage play directed by God (reminiscent of Shakespeare’s ‘all the world’s a stage’ monologue from As You Like It). Chapter four, “Talking Rocks,” covers concepts…

Jared Diamond, in Chapter 19 of the novel Guns, Germs, and Steel, proposes that the black Bantu ethnic group was able to exert dominance over the other four cultural groups in Africa in areas that food production was viable because the Bantu’s sedentary lifestyle was greatly advantaged compared to hunter-gatherers living in the same area. Diamond supports his claims by illustrating the major societal and organizational difference between the Bantu and hunter-gatherer groups and pointing to the methods by which the Bantu expansion was carried out. The author’s purpose is to show what environmental factors led to certain peoples asserting dominance over others in order to support his theory about geographic determinism and refute racist explanations about the fates of human societies. The author writes in a logical scientific tone for an educated and intellectually honest audience. The factors all come together to allow Diamond to create a convincing argument about the factors that led to the Bantu expansion in Africa.…

Perception is the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses or in other words the way we as humans understands and and interpret what we see and what we hear. Language and images like paintings, drawings and photographs are usually a way to express what someone is thinking, the way we see things is structured by what we know and what we believe. Throughout her stories in “Teaching a Stone to Talk,” Dillard uses juxtapositions, analogies and imagery to demonstrate the raw beauty of the natural world and humans’ lack of awareness of it. Nature, as explained by the author, refers to the natural, physical world, and life that is lived by necessity rather than choice. The word nature itself is derived from the Latin form, natura, which means "essential qualities and innate disposition." A general concept is that all things, biotic or abiotic, are a part of nature, yet Dillard defines the natural world as all, that which is unaltered by human interference. Dillard acknowledges humans as members of the natural world, but makes a clear effort to differentiate actual nature from the artificialness…

She goes to the extremes of losing her virginity to a total stranger. In the short story Emma Zunz, Jorge Luis Borges incorporates a sophisticated story structure, explicit narrative strategy, and a core metaphor to illustrate the themes of revenge and justice in the piece. Structure of the Story As the story drops from its climax and introduces its final words, an ambiguous event is incorporated as the reader can only identify and relate to the sentiments of Emma. The father’s story is structured in a way that the readers cannot deductively identify the events that led to the father’s death.…
