Although both works contain the element of love, they are shown from different stances and time periods. The role of the women during the time of the American era of literature was like that of the role of women during the classical period. Women were viewed as objects and were supposed to be submissive to men. The same role and image expectation was prevalent in Medea. Desiree was the traditional housewife during this time. She took care of the children, husband and home. She fell head over heels in love with her husband Armand and despite knowing little about him, they were soon married with a baby. This exhibits that despite their backgrounds and social differences, they loved each other and wanted to make it work. When she was a baby, Desiree was abandoned by her biological parents so she did not know anything about herself hence the title “Desiree’s Baby”. In a sense, she was confused and lost as to who she was as a person and now she and her husband have brought a child into the world and she is unsure of her own identity. It caused her to have a void that she thought her husband would fill and loving him would fix everything that is wrong with her but that was not the case. Armand though the child was not his because he did not know his own background and told Desiree to leave. She shows her independence and strength leaving and taking her child and never returning. This shows that she was not only thinking about herself but her child as well. As a mother, her maternal instinct kicked in and she realized that she had to remove herself from the
