Focus needs to be put on who is actually getting the guns. “Evidence strongly suggests that mass shooters are often mentally ill and socially marginalized” (Metzi 240). What Metzi and MacLeish are saying is that in order for gun control to actually work, mental illnesses need to be better identified and handled then how they are now. Assumptions come up after acts of violence with guns and one of them is that just gun control will not do it. Mental health needs to be better highlighted and changed on how it is treated and the people getting guns who have mental heal issues. This needs to be done in order to curb gun violence and effectively control who gets guns and the manner they get them in. In, “Mental Illness, Mass Shootings, and the Politics of American Firearms”, it states that in some states it is required that psychiatrists evaluate people for the potential to commit violent crimes, and if there are any factors that would indicate they are unstable. The information gathered from these evaluations is then passed on to State Police where they would be able to grant a license, deny a license, or revoke one that has already been given out. “A new approach to addressing and reducing gun-related violence is desperately needed. It has been almost 20 years since Congress has passed any legislation to address the issue” (Keidan 48). Many people do not know how to bring up the issue until it is too late. Different strategies for addressing it which makes the speaker come off well informed and level headed. Starting with the basics of the issue and moving from there will lay a foundation for people who do not know much a starting point. Keidan goes on to say that you should use neutral language when talking about an issue like this, and you should only get personally invested when it would be appropriate to do so to further what you are trying to say. You also have to know that when speaking about gun control you will get a lot of backlash and negative reactions from people and not to let it affect you and what you are trying to
