Architects Apollodorus of Damascus was an important architect in Ancient Rome. Damascus was also a courtier for an emperor who most likely killed him. The Emperor killed Damascus because Damascus spoke to him like he was inferior. Other than this, not much more is known about him. So far, people only know of two very important building Damascus built: the Forum of Trajan, a bridge in Danube, and the Gymnasium of Trajan. The Gymnasium of Trajan was a huge bath house intended for people of all classes. The Gymnasium of Trajan were the most impressive in scale and looks compared to some of the others from that time. Vitruvius’s job lead him to travel around the world to gather information. Vitruvius wrote one of the greatest texts on Roman architecture, De Architectura. This text contains information on not only on their architecture, but also their medicine, philosophy, and mathematics in Rome. Vitruvius references many buildings, but nobody has discovered anything he built. The fifth book in De Architectura gives information, “on various Roman buildings such as the basilica, the best design for theatres to obtain the best acoustics, and advice on building harbours” (Cartwright, M). Vitruvius’s texts have given people insight on how to make things, like theatres and harbours, throughout the ages because it has lasted to today.
