Some of the most popular jewelry was the brooch and rings. The brooch would secure the clothing together. Rings are one of the only allowed jewelry pieces for men to wear. It was the pattern of wearing rings which led to “signet rings”(“Jewelry in Ancient Rome”). They were special made rings with embedded gemstone to impress the seal of the person who was wearing its rank or family crest in wax. More jewelry was worn; amulets, talismans, bracelets, and earrings which were supposed to protect them from evil spirits/curses. There were designs on the jewelry like snakes and animals (which symbolize wickedness).They were also decorated with emerald and peridot from Egypt and Persian carnelian, jasper, lazuli and onyx. There were many different types of shoes in Ancient Rome. Some professions required different shoes than others. Each pair of shoes was made for the conditions of that specific job. Regular people wore soleae (sandals) indoors that did not cover the toe. Outside shoes called calcei/calceus covered the toes and had straps that covered the ankles, calves and sometimes the knees.
