Ancient Religions

From their genesis to today humans have been fascinated with how and why the world was created. As a species we seek a way to make sense of the world we live in and, to find a purpose for our lives. From celebrating religious figures to dedicating millions of dollars and countless hours to scientific research we have spent a great deal of our time trying to find purpose and meaning beyond ourselves. Our need for a higher power or an explanation of the creation of the universe crosses cultures and centuries. It can be seen in the Indus River Valley, one of the first agricultural civilizations known to man, all the way to the megachurches and online sermons of 2017. It is incredible to me that religion is a common thread that links much of our world’s history and culture, and as a person of faith I would like to understand both the development of religion and its place in the modern world as well as how religion serves to both help and hinder our civilization. Throughout this project I would endeavor to research and explore the six major religions of today -Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, and Sikhism-exploring both their practices and the culture behind them. The fact that billions of different people from different walks of life from vastly different experiences all feel the need to explain why they’re here and what their purpose is, is a statement on how similar we actually all are. Instead of viewing religion as something that separates us, we should view it as a unifying characteristic that defines who we are.
