Not very many people know that the Olympics were an important part of Greek history. No other country had anything like it. The Ancient Olympic Games were an important and interesting part of Greek history because it influenced Greek art, it affected Roman relations with the Greeks and it inspired the Olympics today.
At first the ancient Olympics were only held for one day, but in 472 b.c., it expanded to five events (Middleton 2). The ancient Olympics began in 700 b.c (Middleton 2). The ancient Olympics were the most famous competition held every four years in honor of Zeus (Ganeri 49). The Olympic games were a mixture of religion, sport, and war (Ancient 22). A truce was held between the city-states so the competitors may pass through safely (Ganeri 48).
Officials had to make sure that all of the athletes were free-born Greeks and never been accused of homicide …show more content…
Newer states showed younger humans that were naked and had a smile on their face (Middleton 15). Temples and sanctuaries were built to honor the gods and goddesses. They were furnished with important pieces of art (Middleton 11). Greek vases were decorated with glimpses of daily life also so stories from mythology. Vases showed what the greeks wore, what jobs they had, how the lived ect. . Most things we know about ancient greek comes from the vases that they sculpted (Ganeri 48).
Stone, marble, and and limestone were the material that the greeks used to make their sculptures (Middleton 10). On most vase paintings from the 5th century BC shows two pankratiasts fighting watched very closely by a judge holding a branch (Ancient 17).
